Viper Electric Start Kit Install Help!

I trying to install the electric start system from a Viper ER into a base Viper. I have all of the Yamaha service manuals and a copy of the Yamaha tech manual for installing the electric start kit. However, all these manuals are pretty vague about the starter relay connection from the relay to the sled and the fuse box connection.

Is there a connector already on the base Viper wiring harness somewhere for the electric start kit?

And then it seems that the ER fuse box is more than I need for just the electric start?

Has anyone done this retro-fit before?

I really appreciate any help!

I have not personally done this but looking over the instructions for the kit and then looking at a viper er wiring diagram, I belive the differance your seeing is the accessory kit is a add on simplified wiring harness and differnt then trying to incorporate a stock viper er harness, the er stock harness has things incorporated into the guage function and other things that the std viper doesnt use.
 
mrviper700, I realize the more I get into this the more differences in the wiring harness there are between a std Viper and an ER. I have the complete ER harness, but was hoping I did not have to swap it out.

I just started cutting the ER harness open so I can see what wire goes were from the starter solenoid and the fuse box. I do not think I have to make more than 4 wire connections to make this work.

I think it might help if I knew more about how the electric start kit connects to a std Viper harness. I figure there must be a connector on the std Viper somewhere that you plug in the accessory electric start kit harness, but I do not see one. Any clue?

All the plugs are already there!!!! You DO NEED the battery cables and the fuse block and relay assembly from the ER!!!! You can look around and find someone who has put an Electric start kit on theirs ( Like I did) and see if they have the paperwork that came with their kit... You have to unplug the key switch and plug in a patch from the new harness (the electric start harness) but,,,the plugs will be right there and it isn't to hard to figure out what goes where!!! Its just 1 harness and 1 ground wire and 1 wire to the starter motor.. The harness is part of the B+wiring.... Ask if anyone still has the wiring diagram for the electric start kit!!! I threw mine away otherwise I would send it to you!!!! Gary Oles nosboy
 
the B+ cable/fuse block/ key switch is all ONE harness..... It seemed a little confusing after I re read it!!!

Do you remember were the connector is on the std. Viper harness? I have looked around the key switch and the smoothing condensors and do not see an unused connector or plug.

I do have the complete harness with fuse box and battery cables out of an ER. After untaping the ER wiring harness last night and looking at the ER wiring diagram, I have located the 5 pin plug for the the starter relay, fuse box, and ignition.

I am now trying to figure out if there is a connector or plug in my std. Viper that I can either plug or patch into. It sounds like it might be helpful if I can find somone that still has the electric start kit installation sheet. The Yamaha tech manual does not show this.

Hey G.B, I think what I am getting from gary;s post is that you unplug your key switch and whatever and plug the er harness part with fuse box in between, this acts as a sub harness intergrating your harness in it.

See if the er harness has the same plug where the key switch would plug in and its opposite of the end you would unplug from your key switch.This would then take your key switch and route it thru the fuse panel and such before changing the circuit rout for the ign system, hope this makes sense.

I think I am close and that Gary was right. The connector on the back of the key switch matches both in shape and the wire colors to the connector I identified on the ER wiring harness. The fuse box and ingnition relay are wired to the same connector on the ER harness. However, there is a solid red (i am assuming pos +) wire coming out of both the fuse box and relay that are spliced into a solid red wire in the main ER wirning harness before it reaches the connector.

So what I think I need to do is plug the ER wiring connector into the key switch and run a jumper from the red wire out of this connector to the red wire on my sleds wiring harness. Although, I do not know if I need to run a ground jumper as well.

Has anyone installed themselves the electric start accessory kit in their Viper??????

bennyj, I already have been reviewing the wiring diagram in the owners manual as well as the Yamaha factory shop manual. The challange is that the Viper ER electric start system is wired differently than the accessory start kit that you would install on a std Viper.

There are 2 connectors behind the rewind cover panel 1 is the lighting connector .
This one is already hooked up . The harness from the fuse block hooks in here .
The other one is the one from the key switch , is 3 wires and has a cap on it .
That one goes to the solonoid . Hope this helps good luck .

I found the connector with the three wires and the cap. This looks like the lead the starter relay connects to. Can you tell me any more about were the fuse box connects? I do not see another unused connector.

The fuse connecor for the fuse block are used . You need to unplug them and your fuse block will T into them . The fuse block should have 2 short whips that are long enough to reach them . I went through something like what your going through
when I did mine . My kit didn't have any directions in it so I just kept going back to the book . It realy wasn't that bad once I found all the connections . Let me know if

I think a bigger reason I am struggling more than anyting with this install is that the electric start system that I am trying to install in my standard Viper is not the factory assessory kit. I am trying to install a system taken out of a Viper ER. So I have to make the wiring harnesses and try and come up with the right connector or splice in the wires.

My sled did not have a fuse box of any kind. The fuse box from the ER has three fuses in it. Headlamp, taillamp, and ignition. Does the factory assessory electric start kit fuse box have the fuses for the headlamp and taillamp as well as one for the ignition?

I think what your telling me is the fuse box "T's" into the HL and TL connectors. Is this right?

That is right . That was the way my kit came .
The main wiring harness should be the same for the Std . or the ER
kinda 1 size fits all then you add the options .
The only thing I am not sure of are the smoothing condenser hook up.
They are different on the Std models than the ER but if you only use the fuse block with the harness that comes out of it you should be alright .

Since I do not have the "T" connector, I am going to splice in the three wires I think I need from the fuse box into one side of the lighting fuse connector on my sled. There are a couple other wires coming out of the ER fuse box that I am not sure I need.

The ER fuse box has five wires:
HL fuse: Blue & Blue/White
TL fuse: Blue/Red only
IGN fuse: Red & Red/Yellow

The lighting connector on my sled has three wires:
Red/Yellow
Blue/Red
Blue/White

Does it make sense that I would be connecting only one side of the fuse to the sled?

Your fuse block is the T .
Give me a few and I will go and pull the pannel and get you the coller codes and plugs . Back in a few .
