continuing what turk was saying, if the rpms slowly climb from 8200 up to 8500, you know that you are loading the engine as hard as you can while still moving from the peak torque rpm to the peak horsepower rpm. Torque gets you out of the hole, horsepower pulls you the big top end numbers. If the transition were quick, chances are it would be from a belt slip or something binding, and no matter what the cause you wouldn't be loading the engine as hard as you could be.
