Exciter II Mods

I am thinking about an Exciter project sled-either an '89 Le (Blue and Black Graphics package) or a '93 SX (remove the orange/red decals in favor of the '93 LE Gray/Gold factory scheme).

I have never owned and Exciter but growing up in the mid-late '80s that, IMO, was the "muscle" sled of the time-prior to the all mftr. jump into the 600, 700, 800 muscle sleds.

I was thinking an Aaen pipe (or other brand), plastic skis, 1.25 ripsaw, studded, clutch work, perhaps porting and . . .

Through out some suggestions, looking for nice balance between reliability and a sleeper that you might never think twice about until after it blows down the lake/trail.

if you can get the 93sx get it. fast sled. i had one before i picked up my 99 srx 700. i put a psi single pipe on it , what a sweet sound.not to mention the weight savings. came stock with about 94hp. with pipe arount 102. not bad for a sled that was only about 485lbs!!personly, i loved the sx decals, made it stand out. i smoked many 583's with that sled. i wish i still had it. i think they are very rare. that sled with a 1 1/4 ripsaw should rock out of the hole!!!

Good post. I'm looking for ideas as well for a 89' Exciter. So far I just have a Aaen single pipe on it. I'm thinking of maybe long tracking it to 136" or 144" with a 1 1/4" track and a good set of powder ski's. Anyone know what other skids will bolt on to it for a better ride and more travel?

I read on here last week that the 93' exciters had a 5 hp gain over previous years due to a better flowing Y pipe, I don't know if its true.

The front Struts from the 1994-96 Vmax 5-600cc sleds will give you 2" more travel ! You need the longer shock covers, springs and aluminum knuckles along with the struts. You can find them fairly reasonable on E-bay, any parts forum or salvage yards ! I bought a set of brand new(rare) Genuine Yamaha GYT Kit struts off of E-bay that were an upgrade for the Vmax 5-600 sleds with adjustable dampening, rebound and even slightly longer travel for $75.00 ! Yamaha part # SMA-8CA91-10-00 A set of 2" rear drop brackets will offset the taller front end.

The picture shows the difference between the travel on a regular Exciter/Phazer and my XT !

If you are looking to project an '89-'92.
See if you can find Yamaha's stage 2 and stage 3 porting specs.
Had a '89 with stage 2 and then bought a '91 and did a stage 3 all with the PSI pipe. Only use the PSI pipe on an exciter.
The stage 3 porting is the same porting used on the stock '93 SX.
If you get a '93SX there is nothing more you can do to them. They where ported to the max from the factor and the stock exhaust was superb.

My Xtra 10 is set to transfer, so hopefully I can get it to stand on the back bumper, haha. Should be a fun sled to exit the corners on, and play in the ditches with.

I just rebuilt the engine and fired her up for the first time today, started on crank #2 and that's with a crap load of 10W30 in there all over the place, idle well to, now that the crank seals are good.

I used the stock rear hole. haha. front was way off though.

I "narrowed" the pivot shafts in the polaris skid. about .25" ea. side.

It was very easy.

Man, I wanna ride this thing!

Then, I moved the transfer blocks to the far back position, hoping it will take some weight off the skis...

Well; I am picking up my new Exciter II SX this weekend (new to me with only 1,400 original miles). I lost a bidding war on eBay last night for a NOS Exciter II SX cover- I am looking for one if anyone knows where I can pick on eup or has an extra . . .

I had a 91, Bender ported it for me. It woke it right up, strong runner and that was with the stock exhaust still! I believe they basiclly ported it to SX specs. Sometimes I wish I still had it. Enjoy your new SX BigMan76!

Since were talking about Exciter's here....Anyone know how I can tell what year sled an engine came in? I have an extra Exciter 570 engine that came with a sled I purchased and I would like to find out what year sled it was pulled from. With any luck its an Exciter SX engine.

If it is an SX it would of had flat slide carbs with reeds (square intake ports). Any thing before that had round mics. Only difference I can think of for now.
If the exhaust mani came with it, it is shorter on the SX, than previous models. Have to think a little more on this one. I'm sure someone can disifer from the vin.

Look where it says "569cc" on the jugs.

If you spot the letters "8AY" there it's an SX.

"88R" is iron bore cylinders, and the 91-92-93 Nicasil bore non SX cylinders had another number, which I can't think of right now.

I just wanted to make a note that the jugs on my 1990 Exciter LE are casted as 86M,
it has iron jugs with roundslide Mic's. engine ser no is 87N 002270

umm, I don't recall seeing any reeds when I had my Dad's carbs off for cleaning on Sunday. It's a piston port engine.

I would also like to note (if it wasn't already mentioned in this thread) that the majority of these SX's have been updated with THICKER head gaskets and new cylinders...inwhich are rumoured to not be ported the same!

Ike love the blue and the silver TSS covers ! Knowing how good Exciters are in the deep with the stock wimpy track I can only imagine how good your sled is !
