What needs to be done when replacing rings on a Viper? The cylinder walls are excellent. Is it ok to run a 360 grit ball home down it a few times or is this a no no.

Joe, A 360 grit ball hone is WAY TOO smoothe to break the glaze from a nikasil cylinder.. i think i used an 80 or 100 grit... You have to break the shiny surface on the cyl walls in order for the new rings to seal!!! id you MeasuRE the cyl walls?? for taper and out of round also????

nosboy... i think your too smart for your own self!!! i just had to chuckle at "out of round"! its all good, i enjoy reading your posts... its cylindricity by the way (i think thats what you were aiming for) if you ever get bored, you should sit down and do a write up on nitrous and oils from top to bottom for the tech pages. then you could just reference them from then on!

this is a really good idea.

hehe on the cylindricity bit, that was worth a chuckle.

Who in the HelL has heard of CYLINDRICITY????? I'm from CHICAGO (southwest side).. If you EVER call me a CYLINDRICITY,, I'll have to introduce you to my "little friend"!!!! Gary Oles nosboy

BY THE WAY... If you ever spent an afternoon at the dragstrip with me and my racecar,, you would PLAINLY see that I HAVE NO IDEA what I am talking about!!!! Just about EVERY TIME I take the challenger out,, i get my *** Handed to me!!!! Some times they even HAND the PARTS I SPIT ON THEIR track back to me ALSO!!!! They keep telling me it's a "process, not an event". I am STILL TRYING TO PROCESS how I can SQUEEZE ANOTHER 100 HORSEPOWER out of the 440 motor!!!!. I bought the car, it was going 11.70's and IT JUST WENT 10.25's so I am doing SOMETHING right,,,, but,, I WANT TO BE IN THE NINES!!!!!. I don't think the motor can handle any NITROUS,,, YET!!!!!!! I got a 69 440 that I have in MOTHBALLS waiting for a callies crank and a set of oliver rods from SANTA CLAUS!!!! (about 4000.00).. a SET of crossbolted main caps (about a GRAND) and I'm in business!!!! Considering I AM GETTING a LUMP OF COAL for CHRISTMAS,, I will be STEADY in the garage trying to compress it into DIAMONDS!!!! (my next venture).... Gary Oles nosboy

DID YOU EVER put MOTHBALLS in your gastank?????? MAN,,,do I got a story for YOU GUYS!!!!!

Cylinders

Thanks Gary. The Cylinders Are Decent. Still Most Of The Factory Crosshatch. I Will Get And Use A 120 Grit.

good god dont bore them out with stones that rough, a 240-280 grit stone is what you use. Unless the cylinders have alot of miles you really dont even need to do anything to them, the nicasil is very hard and usually always still has the factory cross hatchmarks in them, the rings are not hard to seat at all and dont require alot of scratching of the walls like the old chrome rings did, this comes from the coatings applied to them.

I'm reading posts about cylinder honing and I CANNOT believe some of the GARBAGE people are telling other people on this forum... NIKASIL is some hard stuff!!! 320 grit and 280 grit is a WASTE OF MONEY!!!! Whats that going to scratch???? 120 will work FINE!!! Make sure to use a LOT OF OIL!!! RIGID (the pipe cutting people) make a cutting oil that works real good!!! You DON'T want to use 2 stroke oil (especially synthetic) because you want the hone to do its job!!! You don't have to stay in there for any length of time, just enough to clean up the "shineys"!!! gary Oles nosboy

ya said 80-100 grit now your going finer......

Your opinion is not of fact, call any engine builder of snowmobiles and ask what grit stone they use on the sunnen hone machine if they have one... its not 80-100 grit.

again rings these days have coatings on them to help them seat quickly, we are not talking about the old 70's chrome bore rings that were impossible to seat.

Sorry but I cant agree with ya on this as its not true.

I know guys that use the cylinder hones from the 1960's!!! I don't remember if it was 80 grit or 100 grit or 120 grit,, but I KNOW it wasn't 280 or 320 grit!!! Guys that have been doing it for 20 years aren't usually up on the NEW TECHNOLOGY!!!! How many "engine builders" rely on CRYOGENICALLY treating PISTONS???? PROBABLY NOONE!!!! How many guys STILL USE YAMALUBE??????? ( SINNERS!!!) How many guys use moly Disulfide????? How many builders use CUTTING OIL for honing cylinders????? YOU SEE MY POINT????? Gary Oles nosboy

most rering jobs done at home aren't done on a sunnen!!!! I am talking about a BALL hone from mc master supply!!!!!

This is my last post, I am not gonna keep fueling the fire, but "no"...I dont see your point. I know a guy with a model a engine, so does that mean it uses the same repair tools as a new snowmobile engine does, I think not.

As far hones go, ball hones are junk and they dont cut evenly in a 2 stroke engine, the balls flex in and bounce off the sides/edges of the exh port and transfer ports, you get a much nicer job with a 3 stone spring flex hone, you can adjust the tension of the stones and this is something any backyard builder can buy from a local autoparts store. They even have them in the correct 240-280 grit stones, not 80-100 grit gravel glued on a stick....LOL!!!

I will agree to disagree with your engine building opinions, you seem to think we are again still dealing with the old chrome bore rings!! that was 20 plus years ago!!! :2strokes:

Whatever you say!!! I learn something every day!!!! Thanks!!! Gary Oles nosboy

Hay nosboy, I know its a sled site, but do you have any pics of your race car? Iv'e been drag racing for about 20 years. 11 sec street cars a number of years ago, and a Super Gas car I sold 3 years ago. Currently building a moly tube chassis street car i'm hoping to finish in 2 or 3 years.

I got a whole bunch of pictures.. I don't know how to get them on this website though.. Maybe my girlfriend could post some for you guys!!! I got a BRAND new miller syncrowave 350lx and I am trying to master the art of TIG!!! Maybe when I get good at it, I may go that route.. Now its just making really cool parts!!! Gary Oles nosboy

I thought MOLY TUBE is too ridgid for the street???? Wont it crack all over the place????

I work in a body shop and couldn't imagine taking 80-100 grit to the inside of a motor..even 180 or 220 is may be too corse..do you suggest closed or open grit mr.viper?
