Check the main wiring harness under the engine, causes all sorts of problem when it shorts out near the rear mag side engine mount. Pull it out, inspect it carefully, wrap each individual wire with tape (I believe there are 9 of them), then wrap the hole harness with 1/2" wire convolute (wire loom).

motodave289 said:Sounds like your having problems with hand warmers also. Did you check for short in harness under engine. Just a thought before you put cdi on. Also you say your only getting 12volts at 5000 rpm. My 2000 shows 13.6 V at idle. Maybe stator is week.
hi!! the handwarmer are back running, check the other thread

You change your clutching since the last time you drove your sled? Are you just not pulling your clutching? Maybe the HP is there but with to much clutch

Did you replace the spark plug caps? maxdlx

Does this sled have a roller secondary clutch or stock cam shoe sliders for the helix? If it has the stock clutch then check those little black suckers and make sure they are oem graphite. I got stung on this once, where the dealer put in aftermarket pucks and couple hundred miles later the sled won't pull even 7500 rpm. We looked at everything as well as the secondary, but did not find the problem until the pucks were removed and found they were cracked.

Put here up on a stand and check revs while watching the servio moter.the 98s were famous for failing and would act like wat you are saying.

had a vary similar problem on my 01 700.
Drove me nuts.
It was coolant temp sensor wire rubbing on the motor causing it to back off the timing under full load.
It would act better if I rolled the gas on slowly, but still wouldn't go over 100
Fixed the wire, and all was well again

here is something to try and see if the sled runs better, unplug both headlight bulbs and take it for a ride, see if it pulls rpm or not?
post results.
post results.
i'm sure you will need to change the stator cause he is the one that give the power to run everything else ...my friend had problem with is 98 srx 700 and i think i got the same problem like u sometime it pull sometime it doesnt and no top speed at all ...and here in the area many people change the stator they seem to be popular lolll

You said that it's starting fine so if the problem is in the stator or cdi wouldn't it be difficult to start because of poor spark? I had that problem on my 97 SX700. Just a thought. And I'm not much of a clutch wizard but you can have immaculate clutches and not adjusted properly.

The clutch have been verified by the dealer last year and against this year by myslef. nothing wrong
read this thread. The guy had the same problem.. The sled was starting fine and pulling hard until he reach 8000

well i think you should check your stator ...cause coil need to have alots of power at high rpm so if the power is low you losss alot of power at hight rpm.... i will change my stator for this winter thats sled turns me crazy for the 3 winter for that bugg.. and like i told u alots of people change it in quebec
i'm pretty sure your handwarmer doesnt work good also or heat but take alot of time to heat

YOU SAY WHAT YA HAD FOR COMPRESSION PER CYLINDER. 3:16 (tony)

hi!! well, i don't know the compression for sure but when we did open the engine, i had less than 0,005 between the piston and the cylinder.. its in the norm.. But i might check with a gauge... at first, i was sure this was my problem!!
well, my handwarmer never worked properly since i have this sled but the power was there.. the problem started last year...
But my handwarmer did start to work yesterday after some electrical testing, they now work ,, its weird!! but the sled still doenst pull
I have found a used CDI for 75 bucks... i'll try the stator after that if it doesnt work and resale the cdi!! But i'm still wondering how the cdi can affect the performance at high speed
I will try too, to disconnect the servomotor and run the sled with valves fully open and see what happen

if you disconnect the headlight bulbs and turn off the grip heater all the available power will go thru the ign system and if it will run at rpm then, you would know if the stator is going bad. Abad stator will alot of times only show signs at high rpm/high load.

fotress that is a simple test posted by mrviper and should tell you something.
There is alot of great advice here that should help you but we need information back to try and help you. Details of test results instead of just saying "checked that".
Try the test posted above and if it is the same take a step back take a deep breath and try to descibe test results of clutching, power valve and electrical. Good luck and keep us posted
