I start with Full Choke, idle at half choke for 10-30 secs, then no choke. idle for 1-2 min, then I will rev the engine slowly, to about 3000 Rpm and hold it there for abit, and will then give it a few blurps until I see the engine and Rpm's start to be more responsive. Once the revs seem to move more freely I am happy that its warm, throw the gloves and lid on another 30 secs at Idle, and I'm off.
Personally since there is no base oil in these Engines I personally don't see the need to let it warm up for 10 min, somewhere around 3-5 min seems to be good to me for my sled, maybe an SRX is different. Mind you I also haven't started in -25 Degree wheather yet, this will obviously take longer for the engine to warm up.

This is a good topic. I recently bought a 99 srx700 with 1300 miles on it. The sled is mint, and ran mint when i bought it. I've had it outside, jacked up, cover on and tarped since i bought it. I've started it a few times, and the last time i tried starting it, i got nothing. Before the no start, the sled seemed boggy. So i replaced the plugs and full chocked it, BOOM... fired right up. I went from full choke to no choke instantly and the sled idled fine.
This worked on my Venom and never fouled the plugs. I let it run for a good 5 minutes and went around the yard. The sled still had that bog to it like it still had a fouled plug. I felt the cylinders, and all where warm. A friend said that maybe the gas in the float bowls was bad and it would clean up after a good rip. Any ideas???????????
Thanks in advance.

This sled was completely gone through right before i bought it. It was filled with fresh 93. I'll hope for the best. Running it with the track up doesn't seem to help at all, so i'll wait for a good trail ride around here to see how it acts.
Is my starting procedure OK?

Give it a good rip when you have enough snow, run a tank of gas through her, and see how its acting. If you still feel there is an issue, I'd replace the plugs, and check your compression on the cylinders. Also look at the carbs could be some dirt trapped in there.

just last week my machine would bog down..checked the plugs they were fouled up like crazy, changed them and she fired up like new and has been running good since..but before you bought the machine when was the last time it had a carb cleaning? and your starting procedure seems to be good to me..maybe some of the pros will chime in

It was maybe a week or two before i bought the sled. I bought it off a member from this site but did most conversing on HCS. His screen name is Flyerrs. Nice guy and real up front, as i know some people from this site know him. I did start it up alot until the fouled plug incident, and remember my Venom acting like this after i changed the plugs. After a good rip it was fine, but this is no 600 non-powervalved three into one, and i'm just hoping it's the nature of the beast. I'm not really worried, but throwing it out there and hoping it just needs a good douching!!!!!!!!! BRAAAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

best thing to do is go for another ride and report back see what happens

reach down and feel under the right footboard when that heat exchanger is warm the sled is ready. i go by feel because sometimes depending on air temp is takes more or less time. and like everyone said dont touch the throttle till shes warm. only blip the choke if necessary.

I have always been stumped about covering a sled that is hot after a good ride. Is it bad to cover a rig when it is hot? or should a leave it for a couple hours be for covering?

I don't see a problem with covering it right away, but if ya want wait
10-15 mins, they cool down fast..

Yeah..I read somewhere that covering isn't a bad thing...I generally take a few minutes
of a good laughs with the boys after we hit the kill switch...run to get us a beer...sit or stand by the machines and drink...and when we are ready to head in...throw on the cover and lift up the back end for the night...approx 10min like Daman said...
Unsure if this helps for the next day..but I've noticed it helps keep the frost and fresh snow off the hood and seat...
As for warming up the sleds...Run out...Start up full choke...wait a few secs...half choke...if its warmer I turn the choke off and run inside to dress..if not...I get one of the boys to turn the choke off...usually its 10 mins total...

I'm only able to ride around the yard, so no hi revs. I might go up to Back Lake this weekend and see how she goes.......

AK-Did you get rid of the Phazer?

I agree with this COMPLETELY. its EXACTLY how I do mine. and you will find that once you blip the throttle the rpm comes down. its seems like it has a built in warm up cycle in the cdimaxdlx said:On the vipers, go full choke to get it started, and then go to half choke, only going back to full if it starts to die. After a minute oe when it runs ok on half, shut choke off, once again going back to half if it starts to stall. Don't touch the throttle for a good 5 minutes or it will foul plugs. I let mine run 10 to 12 minutes before taking off. Maxdlx

Nope, it's still sitting in the garage beside the Viper. It's all shined up and ready for sale. I have one guy coming to look at it either tomorrow or Saturday. He told me his price range is 1600-1800 Canadian, and I have decided not to take anything less than 1700 and I'm going to stick to it. If he won't give me that, I'll bite the bullet and list it on Autotrader. There's alot of exposure there, and my Phazer is much better than all of the others out there listed from $1500-2000. I wish I didn't have to get rid of it, it's a perfect sled.

Before I got all of this info from you guys I had it started for only a few mins when I tried to take off in the drive way and it seemed to bog down, and then move. I guess it wasn't warmed up enough yet. Can't wait for snow. I'm tempted to ride the streets a bit if we get any snow on Sunday night into Monday here in Mississauga, Ontario.03viperguy said:I agree with this COMPLETELY. its EXACTLY how I do mine. and you will find that once you blip the throttle the rpm comes down. its seems like it has a built in warm up cycle in the cdi

If you have room keep it for a back up...we all have more than one sled..

do you NEED to sell the phazer for $$$ reasons? if not then keep it for sure. makes for a fun backup sled that you can fool with on occasion
