An Apex is a NICE sled, but there is something about tweaking an older sled and making it perform close to the current models.

I'm scared to think of what I'd have to do to an APEX to keep me tinkering!!! Supercharger........... I might not survive!!!!
 
I only see my wife 10 minutes a day now.On this site every second I have.She keeps telling me she is lonely and that I spend more time on here then with her.Well hate to say it ,but it's true.She works nights anyways and sleeps days.I guess I am a little crazy for Yamaha,once you've tasted Blue...you stay true.
 
I have had excellent luck with ultimax belts and have run them for over ten years and many, many thousand miles and several different sleds.Not knocking 8dn belts, but I prefer ultimax have had 1 bad one over all these years and they covered it no questions asked.I generally run them 2-2500 miles before changing them and clean the belt and clutches a few times in that time period.Tom Hartman the mountain sled guru swears by them and he is a respected guy in sledding circles, just my 2 cents!
 
Blue monster, Just reading your thread it made me relize something. LOL its kinda funny actully. I guess thats what you get for bragging about the snow and blizzards:P hahahaha!!

Can you say KARMA To those who got no snow? LOL sorry, thats really funny! I guess we wont be bragging anymore? we dont want ya to loose a motor now

lol:P I've had my sled for 5000Kmh and i've still using the same ol belt. not a problam. I've switched from 2 back and forth, no problams.! OEM all the way man
 
there is s problem running the ultamax 2...3 belts i normally always run factory blets and never a prob well caus of dealer out of stalk on yamaha belts i ran the 2 till it blew up and than the 3 my buddy ran the 3 we lost 3 belts same day within a few hours..did some research and (just like car tires) the ultamax belts are a much harder rubber compound therefour slipping in the yamaha clutches till they heat and explode ill never run 1 of them again not even as a spare.
 
Can't blame the snow for this problem..it's the friggin stupid belt.Like I said earlier.Always ran OEM belts in my Yamaha's.This the the first time I switched to a different brand and BINGO...you heard what happened.
 
Yamaha belts are harder and Ultimax belts are softer. No question. Slipping is avoided by matching your cluthing to the belt being used.

There are people out there who have worn the clutch sheaves with the hard 8dn belts, so there is no perfeect belt.

You could try the Ultimax XS which will probbly be harder than the U3. The U2 belts are NOT recommended for higher horse power sleds.
 
The dayco belts have ran great for me in the past.
On my 81 Enticer 340 and my 82 540 SRV.
On my 01 MM 700 I can't get a ride out of one.
I always blow one up. Send it back for a new one

New speedo cable cost me $50 at the local dealer here... now we have a new, cheaper dealer... but i bet it's still priced stupid. Try and get a cable from Rich or somebody on here.

It's quite possible that you've heated up that belt with all of the clutching work you've done. Carlise make a good belt. Send them the $9.00, the remains of your belt and the necessary paperwork and they'll send you a new belt. If you don't want it I'll give you$20.00 for it (double your money!!!).

I blew my belt last year and it happend for two reasons 1) clutch alginment and 2) I was racing an APEX and my belt already had 2800 Kms on it. I was stupid.

You may have your centre to centre correct, but your offset might be wrong and you might have the clutches skewed a little (not parallel). That's what I found on mine. Buy yourself an alignment tool or throw your sled on a trailer and bring it over and we can check it here.

Yamaha doesn't make belts. They are made by someone else for Yamaha. Might even be Carlisle, maybe Gates??? Their belts are harder and that is why your RPMs are now up. I'll guarantee you that there is slippage happening now, That's why you need more primary weight to clamp the belt tighter.

You can stick with OEM, but don't assume that you will be immune to belt failure. All belts fail and if you ignore them they'll really fail. When a Yamaha belt fails it will fail good!! Been there done that.

I think the Big Guy upstairs (who also rides a Yamaha by the way) knows you like to tinker, and just wanted to make sure you didn't have NOTHING to do.

Anyway Don't sweat it. It'll probably happen again sometime or something else will happen. It's snowmobiling!!!

(in the 70s, I had to carry 6 to 8 spare spark plugs just to make sure I'd make it home from a 40 mile ride, and it was a single banger sled!!!!)

its true that yamaha doesnt make there own belts, they are made by mitsubushi another japanese company.
 
I agree that those belts are crap. I blew 6 of them one season with my stock 600MM. About 75 miles was average. The stock one never had a problem. I had a couple belt rotation going with them as they would send me a new one each time. Only oem nowadays.
 
MtnMax that is so crazy.If the belts don't last,they shouldn't be selling them.Or sell them for $10 each.No one needs to go thru that,imagine 6 belts ..one season.My 8DN belt which was new at start of last season has 4000 km's on it and it is still going strong.I am getting a brand new one again this week and keeping the other 8DN as my spare.
 
Yeah, i wrote them a letter with the last 2 belts i sent to them requesting my money back because i didnt want more crappy ones in return. I didnt get a response, just 2 new belts. I sold them with the sled. Now that i think about it, it might have been 8 belts, i lost track. Here are the pics of 4 of them:

Got my speed-0 cable.Also ordered the key.Is it really neccessary to change that key.Do I have to remove the plate that is bolted to frame that holds the bearin to get to this.I guess I have to,but that should not be a hard task.
