hey guys just a little question, i left a bottle of my amsoil in my truck last night and it was -40 with the windchill. in the morning i went to use the oil and i saw it was frozen soild. so i brought it inside and thawed it out, now my question is can i still use it or did the freezing make water in it?

Not sure but I don't think oil should freeze. I probably wouldn't chance using it but I could be wrong. I have never had oil freeze before.

HP Injector has a pour point of -46c, Interceptor has a pour point of -50c, I would say your oil might have had some contamination by water.

i am guessing it wasnt solid but it does get fairly thick at super low temps. how do you describe frozen solid? -40 windchill wouldnt effect the pour temp of the oil only the real time temp can do that. wind chill is figured for humans and how they percieve heat loss via wind and cold temps. it does not effect inanimate objects. ski

Don't use it. It has got to have water in it. oil shouldn't freeze. At least that it what I have allways been told.

In Curtis a few years ago it was -45 with the wind chill and I was using the HP Injector at the time. It was left in my vehicle all night which was hard to start the next morning. The oil did pour very slow but was not slushy. It poured more like Mrs Butterworths Maple Syrup but performed just fine.

just curious what was the actual (ambient) low temperature that night.
keep in mind ski's post windchill would have no effect on the oil. you could put a glass of water outside when the temp is above freezing and the windchill wont cause it to freeze.

was it minus 40 degrees or was the windchill minus 40 - two different animals. the freezer may see 0 to minus 10f - just curious on seeing if it gets thick.

-40 windchill is not -40 f or c real temp for inanimate objects either. you are comparing apples to oranges.
if it is -20 f with -100 f wind chill, the temp for cars, trucks , oil, gas and water is still only -20 f. not -100.

it was -35 in my digital temp guage and that morning when i had checked the weather station they has said it was -40 with the chill.. but good to know that windchill has no affect on helping freeze products..i guess we learn everyday

I had some shell ultra syn last year and it was -30 something i wen tto poor it in my 97sx and it was so thick like mashed potatoes then grabbed the old bottle of yamalube and it was still thin, also compared yamalube to hp and dipone and the yamalude was thinner on colder days, so I went back to yamalube. But with my viper I only use intercepter.

yeah i was told to use just shell ultra regular 2 stroke oil because its thinner on colder days but oh well il stick with hp im gonna bring back the bottle and exchange it for a new one,,might have been a bad batch
You have finally seen what oil is like when it's cold.
Now go the other way any get it up to 200 degrees and pour it.
Oil doesn't freeze,,, period.
That's why there is 5W, 10W, and so forth. It's all temperature related how it pours at a given temp.
It's what makes the engine either spin easy or tough as snot to start.
The one factor thats missing is the fact we have fuel injection now thats so perfect, that the engine will fire off regardless how stiff it is.
Now do this back in the 70's or 50's. Your not going anywhere.
If we had to go some where as kids when it was that cold, a fire had to be built under the oil pan. With quilts over the motor to trap the warm air.
Your 50 miles from town.

You only need to put a small sample Like a shot glass or dixie cup in the freezer, and 2 hours later compare it to the sample sitting out.
