I have a 97 Vmax 600 with 6500 miles. I have a bog when I back off the gas, slow down and then hit the gas again--sounds like the primary is not popping back. I have to slow to a near stop and reaccelerate and everything is fine. Does not do it every time. Does not seem like a carb issue.I cleaned the primary and even put a different outer cover on with a better bushing since the bushing seemed to have a coating on it that was partially worn off. Spring is original. I was going to disassemble the secondary next.

Any ideas?

this sounds again like the 'TORS' kicking in....had same sounding problem with my 700sx which i took to the dealer....the problem was the throttle cable was too tight and it triggers the TORS mechanism.....
loosen off the tension on the throttle cable and see if this cures it.

I had the same problem with my 98 vmax600 last year. It was the wieghts in the primary were notched badly. Actually my buddys 600 had the same problem as well all around the 6000-7000 mile mark.

thanks---I can easily disconnect the TORS and see if that helps but I don't think that is what it is. I had TORS act up on other older Yamahas too.

If i take the 3 bolts out on the secondary helix for cleaning-----how much spring pressure is there---can I hold it with a good strap and let the tension slowly off. I have the shop manual and know all the spring holes etc but have never had a secondary apart and want to be carefull with the spring load.

The primary weights are not ridged at all----I wondered if I have a "tired" spring----I may have to buy the new cover with a totally new bushing---that is a terrible design, having to buy the whole cover instead of just a bushing like they used to be.

Yamaha sells a primary clutch rebuild kit which comes with that cover bushing.I rebuilt mine this fall. you don't have to replace the whole cover.
