What Polaris primary does Hartman use for the Yamaha's. All yamaha pto stubs are the same, just the offset is different? Tired of replacing cracked sheaves.

Use a polaris P-85 (which is on every high performance sled since AT LEAST the early 90's. It bolts right on and offset can easily be set. Exact same taper as a yamaha clutch. They are very efficient clutches and rock for top end. Only bad thing is that bushings seem to wear out a bit faster than with yamaha clutches.

IMO the Yamaha is a better clutch. Why are your sheaves cracking? The YXR delivers excellent performance, runs cooler, wears longer and is easy on belts.

are the angles on the sheaves the same? and do you stick with the same 8dn belt?

You have to get one with the domestic twin taper, 30mm. If clutch correctly the p-85 is very efficient and In my opinion is better than the yxr. I am running one on my 1000 SRX and if works very well and yes use the 8dn belt. You will have to adjust the side clearance for the 1 3/8" belt as polaris uses 1 7/16"

Keep this thread up top I want to know about this! I asked this ? a year ago! But when you ask the seller of the clutch if it is from a domestic twin with the 30MM taper all I got was?????????????????

It is a p-85 from the 94-98 indy storms (I'm 75% sure on the years). Polaris number 1321740. Storms were a wider belt than the 8DN so his kit comes with the parts to take care of that. I have hartman's p-85 kit on two mtn vipers and like them alot. I run the yamaha 8DN belt with them. Before the p-85's I had 4000-5000 miles on the stock clutches and noticed the little cracks forming. I highly recommend Hartman for the p-85 setup. He worked with me to get it dialed in. He even called me to make sure that I had got the parts for the weekend and wanted to know exactly how the setup was working in case he needed to swap me for different weights, etc.
I'll admit, If I had known exactly what I needed, I could have gotten the setup a little cheaper, but in the end, I was glad I paid the little bit of extra to get Hartman's experience. We need more guys like him in the aftermarket industry.

By the way, I like the p-85 better for the mtn riding that I do. I don't have any experience with the p-85 on a flatlander sled.

See this is where it gets scary to buy a P85! I just emailed a guy w/ one on ebay it is from a 04 domestic twin & he said it has the 30mm taper! So is it the older clutches or newer? Same problem I ran ito before! :o| :o| :o| :o|

Dan that clutch will work fine for you. I used one of an '02 XC 700 SP. They really are NOT all that hard to setup by any means.

well you have to tune to your rpm for the desired sled but.The clutches are way more simple than yamaha. All the rollers are the same size. The only thing is you have to get the right spacing for the beldt polaris hads shims in there spider you can remove or add to your desire. Then you have the primary spring and weights. When using a polaris primary you can use a wide spread on the helixes such as a 48-36 and so on.

OK! That is the ? some had here how to adjust for a Yamaha belt! You are the first to answer That! So take the clutch apart & remove some shims. Now we are getting some where.Thank you1 The p85 seems that they are fairly cheap & there are a lot of them out there too!

After a bushing thats pressed into my yamaha clutch shot out and did $400 damage I looked into alternatives..hatman hooked me up with a new p-85 clutch,a custom weight and spring set up, and a bushing to run a ultimax belt and awesome set up instructions.Wow what a difference the efficiency of this set up is huge.I took a closer look at my other yami cluches and found small fractures. THEY are Not all the same my buddy found this out the hard way! he put one on his vmax he purchased from ebay.needless to say he bent my p-85 puller.we tried heat and grease. it is on there forever..be careful!! Tom Hartman has alot of experience with these I'd pick his brain 1st.you can't beat his prices and knowledge..also the cup lite race cars w/ red head tripples run p-85 clutch's..
