Squirting Zerks

2001 SRX700. The welded-in zerk fittings on the rear suspension are leaking. When I grease them they continue to ooze grease out of the zerk for days. Using a pick, I can feel that the little ball bearing is not sealing the zerk. I'd replace them but they're welded in. Anybody have this problem?

why don't you just buy caps for the zerts. also why did you weld the zerts in, why didn't you just thread the holes and then thread them in. makes it much easier to change when they go bad as yours did. :bash: just asking.

The factory welded these in, cause the wall of the tub was thin & if it was threaded in it would rub on the inner shaft...they are not supposed to ooze out...& caps, most likely would pop off under pressure...
Fix...(next time you have the skid out) is to grind off the original zerk(s), weld a nut with the proper size zerk thread & length, add new zerk(s), touch up with paint & your read to go...better than new...

What he said.... I've had to do that a few times on some agriculture stuff I've fixed in the past, works great, and makes changing them extremely easy the next time around

That's a great idea to put new zerks in. For right now, I don't think I'm going to be able to do that. What would be the consequences of simply filling em full 'o' grease twice a year?
 
well if ya pump enough grease in till it comes out the ends of the shaft then its getting grease all over, your just gonna have to do it more often to make sure grease stays in there since it will just leak out
 
I have never seen a P/A that had the ball valve in the zerk in the rear
skid(except the transfers) that was factory, for some reason they didn't
use that type of zerk, ALL my P/A's are like that(with out it) and there
all bone stock...

I grease mine 3-4 times a season,yea a little comes back out but it's
really not that much usually..i wouldn't worry about.....
 
Like DAMAN,,, I grease the sled each time I take it out.. i usually go on weekends and grease it before each trip!!! I use plastic caps to keep crap from getting in and they sometimes open up by themselves,,,but,,,I use MOBIL SYNTHETIC GREASE on all my greasable things (synthetic grease works better).. if anyone knows anything about GREASE,, It is actually MOTOR oil mixed with talcum powder,ground aluminum,ground metals,(copper,brass,bronze,etc,etc) so,,, BE REALLY CAREFUL what and which kind of grease you use on your sled!!! SOME GREASES ACTUALLY hurt and/or DESTROY your stuff prematurely...
 
I use yamaha's low temp snowmobile grease,,keeps parts moving good
when very cold out...1 tube last's 3-4 winters.
 
If you want me to,,, i could tell you why they DONT weld a grease fitting with a ball valve in it!!!! JUST ASK!!!
 
but,,,, If you THINK HARD ENOUGH,, you will be able to figure it out ALL BY YOURSELF!!!
 
I used to SWEAR BY YAMAHA's low temp grease UNTIL I took the suspension out and pulled the shafts!!! That LOW TEMP YAMAHA grease RETAINS WATER and turns into creamy bullshit!!! EVERYTHING rusts and beats the HEll out of the bushings!!!!! Since MOBIL SYNTHETIC GREASE,, I haven't seen any problems!!!!

Mobil 1 spec -40 F to 350 F... The reason that YAMAHA doesn't use ball vlaves in their WELDED grease fittings is..... In a grease fitting that has a ball, there is also a spring to keep the ball against the inlet and prevent grease from coming through the fitting backwards... WELDING requires a LOT OF HEAT to fuse the grease fitting to the tube.. The little spring COULD NOT HANDLE the heat, therefore, the grease fitting would NEVER WORK in its intended application... The ball would NEVER SEAT and the use of a ball in the fitting is a BAD IDEA!!!! Theres your answer!!!
