i know i asked this before, what are the horsepower ratings on the srx between 76-80? i tried doing a search but it doesnt keep records that long. i apoligize just wanted to know them once more. my friends think that i'm nuts for wanting a 440 srx. they say fr the same money that they could buy a newer sled with better suspension. thats no fun because without suspension you never know whats going to happen. thats what makes it interesting.

Tell your freinds to take ten grand and go buy a new sled (anything they want). Take another ten grand and go buy a 77 SRX (for that amount it will be VERY nice). Put both sleds in the garage and cover them up. Come back in 5 years, uncover them, take pics and put them both on ebay. They will have their answer on which sled was the better buy.
An 08 Viper, Mustang or Vette is cool but park one along side a Hemi Cuda, LS6 Chevelle or GT500 Shelby at the drive in and nobody will care.
Old Muscle of any kind STILL RULES and the Barret Jackson auctions prove it.
Good Luck on your search for an SRX

Holy smokes, I didn't know they revved those motors that high. That's insane RPM's for a twin. I'd love to have a Mint 77 SRX 440.

HAD THEM ALL AND SAW THEM ALL DYNOED. REMEMBER, ALL 100 % STOCK NUMBERS HERE. 3:16 (yammie tony)
Why the reduction
Why did the HP #'s consistantly decrease like that?

VERY SIMPLE ANSWER MATT, THE SRX BECAME MORE OF A TRAIL FRIENDLY MUSCLE SLED IN 1978 THAT COULD BE TRAIL RODE. YAMAHA JUST BASISLY DETUNED THEIR TOP OF THE LINE ROCKET AFTER 1977. THE 76 AND 77 WERE ALL OUT RACERS. 3:16 (yammie tony)

I remember reading in one of the snowmobiling magazines last winter an article about either the 76 or 77 SRX. It was very light and made almost completely out of titanium I think? Or some other light metal.

Those 77's are BAD TO THE BONE!!!!!! If you have never seen one run you are missing the true meaning of a (Muscle Sled). About the only places you will see them run anymore are at vintage or local club drags and they usually won't be running against newer iron so you don't get a feel for how fast they really are when compared to new ones. Guys with newer sleds (even 7 and 800 classes) don't like to see them at the line so they usually set up the classes so old sleds like the 77 have to run in the vintage classes and arn't allowed to run with new stuff otherwise one guy with a properly tuned 77 could be going home with all the trophies and everyone else would going home to call their dealer and bitch about being beat by a 30 year old dinasour.
The last time I saw one run against new sleds was about ten years ago. A local ski hill had drags every spring just before they shut down for the summer. It started right at the bottom of the hill in front of the lodge and when up about 400ft to the finish line. Most of the sleds there were ten years old or newer and my buddies 77 was one of the oldest sleds brought to the show. They wouldn't let him run 440 class but did let him run 600 improved. Everybody was laughing is his old dog but when the light turned green and that thing exploded to the top of the hill 10 lenghts ahead of the guy in 2nd everybody was cheering except the compition. They were over at the tech counter crying (no fair). Yamaha isn't the only manufacturer with old (hot rods) but the 77 SRX is about the best Giant Killer ever made so be very leary about racing if you meet one out on a lake. If he wants to race for money you could be going home with lighter pockets.

I HAD MY 77 SRX FROM 1988- 1992. I ALSO MIGHT ADD I BOUGHT A 79 AND A 78 BRAND NEW. THEY RAN GOOD, 77 RAN GREAT!!! ANYWAYS, IN THAT TIME FRAME, THE 650 POLARIS INDY, THE MACH 1 X , AND THE 650/700 WILDCAT RULED THE ICE AND GRASS DRAGS. I SHOWED UP WITH MY 77 SRX AND WON TOP STOCK POINTS CHAMP ON OUR ICE CIRCURT THREE YEARS RUNNING. THEY ALL RACED FOR SECOND PLACE. ONLY THING CLOSE WAS A GUY ON A 700 WILDCAT. YOUR RIGHT THEY WERE GIANT KILLERS. THEY DEFINE THE SAYING '' POWER TO WEIGHT '' RATIO. 3:16 (yammie tony NOTE: THE TROPIES AND SNO-WEEK AND ON THE TRAIL RESULTS ARE IN MY GARAGE IF ANYBODY DOUBTS THIS.

unless he was talking about the non production '74 srx snowpro (only 3 were made). that had alot of titanium and magnesium as well as aluminum in it. that sled was responsible for the development or the first production '76 srx. Hal Armstrong wrote a great article for i believe snowgoer on the '74 snowpro srx last season.

so what we can learn from this is that a brand new phazer has less hp than a sled yamaha made in 1976.

I DON,T KNOW IF THE NEW PHAZER HAS LESS HORSEPOWER THAN A SLED MADE IN 1976, BUT I WOULD SAY ITS HEAVIER THAN A SLED MADE IN 76. 3:16 (yammie tony)

YAMMIEGOD3:16 said:LAKE, HARD TO REMEMBER, I SAY HP WAS CLOSE TO THAT. I THINK WE RAN 112 mph IN 660 ON ICE. SLED STARTED LIFE AS A 78 SRX, THAN WAS COMPLETELY CHOPED INTO A MOD. 77 SRX MOTOR, PIPES ( with yamaha update for stingers ) .44 CARBS, COMET CLUTCHES, CLEATED TRACK WITH LITEWEIGHT STEEL CLEETS, 76 SRX SUSPENSION. WAHL SKI,S, 2.1/2 gallon gas tank, RAN MOTOR AT 10,200 , 114 RACE FUEL, 7000 ENGAGEMENT. !! etc. I WOULD PUT THIS SLED UP AGAINST ANYTHING. 3:16 (yammie tony)
Ever get a little squirrely on ya Tony?
My buddy Dons 77 is mostly stock with worked up 44's, Polaris P-85 primary, Aaen pipes and Camo rubber track with 230 ice picks. You gotta have it pointed in the right direction and be 100% ready before you drop the hammer or that little S.O.B. will kick you right in the teeth. It can be very unpredictable sometimes. One guy asked him at the drags once (how do you think you're going to do today Donnie) and he replied "WIN, Spin or Wheelie to HELL". It turned out to be a 100+ft wheelie day and he came home with 2nd but the crowd loved it.
Nothin like vintage muscle
