WAHL SKI,S, 2.1/2 gallon gas tank, RAN MOTOR AT 10,200 , 114 RACE FUEL, 7000 ENGAGEMENT. !! etc. I WOULD PUT THIS SLED UP AGAINST ANYTHING. 3:16 (yammie tony)
Tony, very nice. Betcha it was hard to wipe the smile off your face running that sled.Did you run gyt pipes at those r's or stock?
Tony,
Going to any shows soon? I'm just starting to feel better. Had some problems. Still haven't finished the SSR. I did get all the parts for it. I got a ton of money in it. The last time I looked at it was in April. Let me know if you here about any shows coming up. Thanks Dean-o

no trouble, take it to PM's or the management will have to get involved. That'd suck, I'd really prefer to not have to deal with that stuff.

lockity, no WWIII here. If there's major issue, do NOT start another post with it, PM me and I'll try to sort thru it. OR sort thru it yourselves by PM.

re-opened by popular demand. Sounds like the issue is sorted, and I think there's good information here that I don't want to see lost.

When you say they detuned them, what did they actually do? I can't imagine they really changed that much?? Did they run lower compression? change the porting? what did they actually do to make more or less hp? The reason I'm asking is that I just bought a 1980 srx, and wondering what I can do if anything to bring up the hp on my 80 dog..... thanks guys.

get rid of the butterfly carbs and get some 40mm flatslides or round slide 38's if your on a budget. The timing is alot lower, differnt pipes, lots of little things but from 77-80,the 80 can be brought right up to the 1979 hp specs, I think it was 72hp? could be wrong?, check with Tony(yammiegod) he will know exact numbers of a 79 srx hp. Anyways, the cdi and stuff is fine in your 80, just get a comet clutch on it, and slide carbs. I would also get a 79 skidframe as the 80 is steel and heavy where as the 79 is aluminum, it can be installed in it.
if you have lots of $$ to throw at it, get Aaen wild pipes, porting, headwork, advance the timing, shorten the intakes, lots of stuff, this will be around 105-108hp then! These little 440's can run very stout when done up right, of course this is race only, your not gonna trail ride it after all the last mods!

1980 SRX MIGHT BE THE BEST LOOKING SRX OF ALL, BUT IT WAS THE SLOWEST. THIS WAS YAMAHA FIRST YEAR FOR OIL INJECTION ON THE SRX, BUTTER FLY CARBS , AND A TOTALLY DEFERENT SKID FRAME FOR A MORE BLUSH RIDE. WITH ALL THIS SAID THEY DID SHARE SAME CYLINDERS AND HEADS WITH 79 SRX AND NO THERE WAS NO PORTING CNANGES. ANY PORT TIMING CHANGES WOULD BE NICE PERFOMANCE GAIN. WHAT I FOUND BACK THAN WAS COMET CLUTCHES WERE A GREAT PERFOMANCE GAIN ON THESE SLEDS. SO TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, YOU CAN BRING THE HP WAY UP, LIKE DON SAYS, BUT YOU WILL NEED BIG CARBS, WILD PORTING, RACE PIPES, etc. !! IF YOU WANT TO START SLOW, START WITH CLUTCHING FIRST ON THIS MACHINE. 3:16 (yammie tony)justinvintageyamy said:When you say they detuned them, what did they actually do? My first choice would be the SRX440 SnoPro that Shubitzke and Trapp raced.
My second choice would be the SSR, it's one of the nicest looking Yammie's!
until then...I'm stuck riding a 1000cc APEX GT

DUDE, PRETTY HARD TO COMPARE A 1980 SRX TO THE THE SLEDS SHUBITZKE AND TRAPP RACED ALONG WITH A SSR. HELL THE VALUE ALONE AIN,T EVEN CLOSE LET ALONE PERFORMANCE. AND YES, I WOULD THING A APPEX WOULD HANDLE THE MOGULS ALITTLE BETTER THAN A SSR lol!! 3:16 (yammie tony)

I was raised around Yamaha during the 70's!
I eat, sleep, shit, and piss Yamaha!!
My garage is full of Yamaha's, snowmobiles, motorcycles, 4-wheelers,
I won't listen to a stereo system unless it's a Yamaha.
We owned a dealership in the early 70's and were priveledged to have one of the first SR-433's. My last sleds from that era were a GP643 and a GP-292.
I love that SRX-433 Sno-Pro but reality set's in, and I'll never see one in my garage, I love the SSR, and yes, $12,000 can probably put one under my Christmas tree.
I can still super tune a free air Yamaha from the 70's with all the tricks from the 70's. We had a class 1 sled that was beating class 3 sleds in the drags.
I had an RD-350 motorcycle in the 70's that would kick the shit out of any other bike on the street, thanks to those Yamaha service bulletins and parts bulletins, ( i had it matching all the road racer specs) and used alot of those tricks to build my son's 350 Banshee that has never been beat.
But I've been out of touch for a long time and I have to compliment the guys on this site, you guys really know your stuff. My compliments to the guys that carry on the fine tradition of being a knowledgeable Yamaha follower.

Probably 65+. It's funny how many SRX motors have been on the dyno over the years but never in stock form. The Dynomites came out after SRX's stopped being raced in stock class. Now dynos are everywhere and it would be fun to have a good stock motor from each year to try out. I have a dyno and a 340 motor so maybe I'll try it when I get time.s70897b said:what about 76 340 srx hp #'s ?
