I have a 1998 SRX700 engine is all stock, I have my stock clutch dialed in so when I mash the throttle from a dead stop, the rpm's jump to 8100rpm's then holds steady at 8300rpm's until it runs out of gearing. This is with the stock clutch with rivits removed/added.
What I was wondering is if I would gain anything by installing a Heel Clicker clutch kit or would I just be going to a lot of work and expense and end up with the same performance as I have now?

But Tony if he is hitting his rpms how can it be improved?
 
Good question equalizer...I was going to purchase the 4.5gram rivets, www primary and RX-1 helix when the mechanic told me they did a similar mod to another SRX and said it didn't make much difference. He said since I ride mostly ungroomed backroads and stubble fields it may hurt my sleds performance. I going to get the parts anyway because I trust the good advice of of the members of this site. I do have a slight over-rev though so it may help with bringing that back in line.

If you race a well clutched srx on hard pack snow with equal traction you would get dusted....badly.Equalizer; if you hit those rpm,s with the stock weights/helix/springs I think you have some powervalve issues & aren,t getting full power. I have to add about 6 grams to each hole in the 8dn-00,s in a 98 sRX 700 to even get em close to proper rpm,s.

I'm running 20/37 gearing with 8 tooth drivers and a 1.25 inch track. I can't remember off hand how many grams the previous owner said he had to put in the weights but he said it was the heaviest rivits the dealer had [I'll check tomorrow] and then he backed off the secondary [70 degrees I think but I'd have to check to be sure] to get it to shift up quicker. He said before he did any changes to the clutching it was really over reving.
It seems to perform fairly well, my brother has an 05' RX1 [stock] and from start to finish on hard pack snow they are almost exactly the same in a 1/4 mile dig but I can beat my friends 03' RX1 [stock with 1 1/2'' track] by 5 lengths or so in the same distance. [I also raced an 02' SRX and was able to beat him by about 1/2 a length in the same distance but I didn't know the guy and therefor have no idea how well his SRX was set up] I'm not sure if that's good for a 98' SRX or not. I just wasn't sure if there was anything to gain by going with a Heel Clicker setup or if I should leave it alone and call it a day. I've built and raced cars and motorcycles for years and own an engine rebuilding business so I'm no stranger to engines but this clutching thing drives me crazy!! Your sled sounds like it,s performing well but with that gearing it should be pulling a lot more weight. I clutched a 98 srx stock with 22/38 gearing 9 tooth drrivers & had to add 6.5 grams to each hole to get rpm,s under 8400 rpm. Your running a lot lower gearing then that & should be able to pull a lot more primary weight.

Thanks Turk, this weekend I'll pull the power valves and give them a good cleaning and then do a compression/leak-down test to make sure all is mechanically well just to be sure. Thanks again!

SO EVERY SRX THAT EVER WAS CLUTCHED WITH AFTERMARKET WEIGHTS, SPRINGS , HELIX,s LIKE HEEL CLICKERS AS A EXAMPLE WAS NOT HITTING ITS RPM ? ALWAYS REMEMBER, CLUTCHING INPROVES YOUR SLEDS PERFORMANCE, FROM ACCELRATION, TO BACK SHIFT, TO OVERALL CLUTCH EFFIENCEY. BESIDES , I AM NOT SOLD HE WAS HITTING HIS RPM. Simple answer

Its all in the PROFILE of the weight, some weights are ALOT more aggressive upshift then others are, its not only the rpm in which the engine runs at. If a non aggressive weight such as the stock 8dn-00 wieight would be compared to a heel clciker 40-10, the differance would be HUGE, being the heel clicker is 10 times more aggressive. So it really comes down to the profile of the weight and how it loads the motor. Turk is right, as most people forget that when you gear a sled down(smaller teeth on top or larger on bottom) it allows the sled to pull MORE clutch weight because the gearing is removing the load from the engine, thus its easier for the engine to rev up faster and further. By gearing the sled up(lower numerically gear ratio) you apply MORE load to the engine, it will use less grams in the front clutch. There are advantages to both, its the sweet spot your looking for between the accelaration of the machine from a standing stop to wide open speed produced. So keep that in mind.

Just because a srx is clutched to perfect rpms per say with a paticular weight does not mean it cant gain performance with a differnt profile, more aggressive weight.

I haven't checked the accuracy of the stock tach with a portable yet, I've been going by the stock Yammy tach and it jumps up to 8100rpm's as soon as I nail the throttle and by the 60ft mark [or so] it has climbed to 8300rpm's where it will stay steady until it runs out of gearing at the end of the 1/4 mile, after that the tach will start to climb to where it runs out of steam. I did some searching on here for the ideal rpm on a 98' SRX which turns out to be 8300rpm's.

I'm very new at this clutching thing and am trying to learn as much as I can so I really appreciate any and all info that I can get. If I can get make some improvement by re-clutching I'm definitely interested! Thanks for your help!
 
ALL THE SET-UPS MENTION ON THIS SITE ARE ALL GREAT SET-UPS. ONE DOSE NOT NEED HEELCLICKERS. THERE ARE NICE GAINS FROM YAMAHA CLUTCH SET-UPS RIGHT HERE. I DO KNOW I HAVE LEARNED THAT MOST FIRST YEAR MODELS LIKE THE 98 SRX HAD AWFUL CLUTCHING OUT OF THE BOX. 3:16 (yammie tony)

The fellow I bought my 98' from had told me that when he bought it new, the clutching was horrible as it was reving over 9000rpm's and that he had clutched it and it was much much better. He said he also changed the crappy stock track! I was suprised find that Yamaha would have had such a poor set-up from the factory but I'm told the newer ones were set-up better. Thanks for all your help!

Ya, I'm going to pop the chain cover and check and see what gearing is in there for certain, as well as check to see if it does indeed have the 8 tooth drivers as the previous owner had claimed. Something is strange b/c I'm getting about 100mph top speed out of it but from what I understand, it should be less than that if the gearing figures I listed are indeed correct. I suppose the 1 1/4" track would gear it up some though. Anyway, next on my to-do list:

Clean and adjust the power valves

Compression check and leak-down test

Install the 2003' Viper skid and hyfax wheel kit
and then tackle the clutch/gearing issue

you could try another helix
stock is 47 ( at least for my 2000)
and a higher initial ramp angle ( 51/43, 48/xx) will allow the clutching to shift faster initially. the srx motor seems to keep up and not bog, ( this is the theory that i interpreted from many discussions here)

I loaded the clutch, changed the primary spring and added a 51/43 and really inproved the first 100 ' or so racing the buddies 800 Revs. went from staying equal to jumping out front early and maintaining the lead

so, try some progressive helix angles is my advive

but Turk and Mr. V willl set you up
