1994 VMAX 600 - any problems??

My buddy is looking at a 94 Vmax 600. The guy doesn't want much for the sled. I was wondering if there is anything that he should be looking for before he buys the sled. Are there any common problems with this sled? Any other info on this sled is welcomed.
 
I owned a '94 700 that broke a crankshaft just like all the other 94 700's. Several guys in the riding group had 600's. A well tuned 600 ran with the 7's and I don't remember hearing of one breaking a crank.
 
I have a 96 and I love it, but I need more power so I am switching to a 700 very soon. Had no problems really, except they dont get the best fuel mileage.
 
Thanks guys....so no big problems that should scare him away too much. He just wants a cheap sled to get back into the sport and come out once in awhile. Sounds like it should be ok for him.
 
He is going to look at it this weekend and hopefully pick it up. The guy wants under $500 for it. Said it could use a new track and needs new seat/recovered. Then give it a good going through, and it should be ready for the snow.

Like the other guys said, runs very rich on oil. Only other comment I have is make sure the guy didnt try twin pipes as these sleds didnt fair well with mods from my experiences.
 
I have a 95 thats got GYT pipes and setup according to info found on this site and it's an animal. She does like fuel though. I have also been looking for the oil pump fix but have yet to find it. If anyone can direct me to the place where this info is I would be greatful.
 
What brand 94' 700 was someone talking about ???? Arctic cat ??
I know yamaha made vmax 500 and 600's and the Vmax-4 750 in 1994-just wondering????
I had a 95' vmax 600 - good reliability-only about 10-12MPG -don't remember what the oil consuption was like?
 
96 XT and Same 600 motor as the 94s and its a pig but has good power especialy with PROPERLY tuned Twin pipes. 10-15mpg usualy They are good sleds but the 94 could use a suspension upgrade, We changed my dads 94 out with a 96 XT suspension huge improvement, some have mentioned changing to newer skids I believe the Viper skid is the one mentioned most. Its usualy worth the effort if he get back into riding a lot.
 
I have a 95 Vmax 600 I bought new, 6500 miles and still going strong. I had the oil pump recalibrated at Bender racing at 1500 miles. Huge improvement. Steer clear of twin pipes, the guys at Bender said pipes were a waste of $$$, and they'd heard of lots of blown cylinders from twin piles. Also rejetted with a clutch kit, and mileage improved to the same as my buddies SXR600. Before it was terrible, about 8 mpg. Now it is 11-12. We are gallon for gallon at fill ups. Note: My Vmax is for sale in the classifieds, I bought a 2003 Viper ER at the end of last season.
 
I had a 94 vmax 500 that i put DG twin pipes on

Huge Huge waste of money.

It costed me 2 pistons and twice the amount of gas.

oil use on these sleds are horrible

Use the stock single pipe. It makes the best HP these sleds are built good fromt the factory for everyday trailability and performance.

I have a 94 Vmax 600 St long track and like it alot. I did the newer style secondary 95-96 secondary swap and installed a 96 Vmax 600 XT pipe which is the same as the GYT. I also installed a skid from a 2000 venture to increase suspension travel. I installed a oil pump from a 97 600 twin and reduced oil consumption greatly. Really helped with the power also. I also installed 96 Vmax 600 XT carbs in mine. It runs just fine. Next step is C and A skis or some stock SRX skis. Sleds has over 4000 miles on it. I did loose a piston ring at 4000 miles then rebuilt it. It was 40 below when the ring went. Maybe had reduced oil flow. Switched over to amsoil after that. It flows better in cold weather
 
Not to disrespect anyone but, I think a lot of the problems come from mismatch of aftermarket parts and/or not the proper installation. By that I mean installing pipes first and then taking a wait and see if I need a jet change. IMO if the pipes go on, then the carbs need to be tuned to the pipes and the clutches need to be tuned to the pipes and carbs. All at the same time. Thats what I did to mine and did it once. The only thing I changed after that was the secondary spring. The hardest part was gathering all the info needed to do the job correctly. Again YMMV
 
I've been running my 95 600 with GYT twins on it for 2 seasons, this will be my 3rd, have not had ANY reliability problems with the pipes on, it just took a lot of adjustments in the carbs to get everything tuned just right. The improvement in power is very noticable and was worth the aggrivation of getting the pipes properly tuned and again, NO problems with over 2000 miles with the pipes on now.
