viper7mi said:I printed off the bill and with the new above information from sj regarding the sae j2567 it looks like the standards are being revised to new standards set by the 2003 engineers. We have newer sled with newer mufflers why compare them to the 1977 standards.
Has anyone with a stock sled been tested and were the results?
sj send him the information you talked about and see what he responds.
he/they know my opposition...I need someone else to forward that info please...
proves my point the inconsistancy with the testing..

Its those stupid super loud exhausts. If the punk kids and the super loud exhausts were not out there, this bill would never have been written.
I will refuse to get into my extremely low opinion of politics, our state, and the economy. I don't have enough time or Valium to go there.
Next time you hear one of those stupid cans, do our sport a favor and beat the kid with a lead pipe and put a muffler on his sled. Cans don't have to be loud to be fast, light, or efficient.

I agree....lets examine your total statement though..
you live in lake orion..ever been near the lake...in the summer...the sea doos and jetskis..an occasional jet boat...how about the harley or semis up on m-24???
our sport is a three month shot...just let the dnr get a hold on this...it's not for the noise...it's control...the ability to spot check for alcohol etc..
imagine if you are out on lake orion and racing around two stock machines and mr.dnr come out to chack your DB'S out there on the glare ice...a little harrassment....and right newt to you is a guy running his dirt bike with picks making more noise...yet no law..and nobody saying boo to him...
BOTTOM LINE...YOU CANT POLICE INCONCIDERATE PEOPLE...THEY WILL BE INCONCIDERATE ON WAY OR ANOTHER..

This is a little off topic but if the DNR does not stop playing games there will be no groomed trails to ride on.

now you see some of the issues....they want to control us....screw with us.. and not give the oney where it belongs....and where do you think the ticket money will go? not back into the trail system or to that individual trail owner...
this is another tax boys...with more to follow...
the state doesnt have enough money to run it...but the are finding ways to give out less and to take more from you..
you are warned...take action now before it's too late..

I know this is a bit off the topic but while we are talking noise I'll say this.
Man how I love the beginning of November thru Mid March. Nice and quiet here at the house. Kind of a Harley (and knock off's) free time.
Seriously with the exception of the odd construction vehicle (Dump trucks and gravel haulers) Harley's and other V-twins are the loudest things out on the road. When I can hear a Harley drive down the road I live on (near Cass and Elizabeth Lakes) drive on down the road nearly a mile until after the hill I know they are just too damn loud. (Thank God for the DVR I have or I'd miss minute long segments of TV while the giant farting noise dissipates)
What we all need is not more laws but the enforcement of the laws on the books now. And if you can put peer pressure on anyone you come in contact with to urge them to quiet it the "F" down before they ruin it for all of us. Snowmobiling seems to be the sport that non-snowmobilers seem to love to pick on.

Are you guys flat out against loud exhausts? Last time in the UP there was a Cat guy who was so loud everyone kind of stopped at the gas station to look, including people who werent on sleds. If he got a ticket I would have been glad, he was an asshole and pissed off alot of people. You could tell 2 blocks away he was illegal. All that for a little extra horsepower on a sled that had 140 stock. If he was really using all that power on the trails instead of just trying to be cool he was definetaly a danger/annoyance. You cant piss off the locals if they dont notice you. A loud exhaust is completely optional. I know that atvs have different levels of performance exhaust, you can improve performance and not be an annoying, illegal asshole. I have no sympathy for the loud guys, we have enough to worry about in this sport. If they want to test me fine, I am on a public trail not a racetrack.

Good post - I agree - if you want more hp get a bigger engine. But keep it quiet.chitownpete@yahoo.com said:Are you guys flat out against loud exhausts? I agree with the post as well...my opinion is not for the guy lioke the above...more for a guy like myself...more considerate andyet a mildly modified exhaust... and then there is the environmental challenges..what if they do the test at 4ft at the rear..and I have an attak....and further on glare ice(reflective) compared to in 2ft of powder in a meadow (muffling)....or what about a wide open windy day....compared to a wooded sheltered area....all of these would give different readings...a nd further..what will be the standards for testing equipment???
what brnd...will they be be recalibrating on the trail right before the test after bouncing around? I doubt it... the fines for these violations will be $100-$250.00 ...so what if you got yanked over by some officer who has it out for you cause he doesnt like the color of your machine and you get that ticket...???

Has anyone here ever been harassed about noise either from a stock or modified exhaust? My buddy received a kind warning a few years back in Wisconsin, he had pipes and it was obvious he was illegal. The officer said "youre a little loud, if I see you again you will get a ticket." I thought the cop was very fair. Then again we didnt ride like jerks and werent drunk. Maybe that helped.

well thats a nice story...has anyone in michigan received a ticket for no registration or no trail permit?
hell yes...because the laws a specific unlike the old noise law...
this is the reason for this bill...the new bill fixes the vagueness and will guarantee fines...

If passing such a law improves the chances of a landowner keep his land open to our trail cutting through his property, then I'm all for it. Having the right to mod an exhaust is nice, dont get me wrong, but in the big scheme of things, I think keeping the landowners happy far ourweigh it.
I had to deal with a trail closure this year and its amazing how one closed trail affects the whole area.

This issue of modified exhausts has been and will be argued for years to come. Bottom line, whether you want to hear it or not, it is a fact that quieter snowmobiles help the sport. Will this law prevent land closures, hell do I know. The perception of the law to the general public will help and the law can only help our sport going down the road.
Its funny though, 10 yr.s ago, I will admit that I would have responded differently so I can appreciate your point of view.
Sled at that time. 1997 700sx with Bender 'quiet' pipes. : )

This topic is a touchy one it is surely the double edge sword. But we have to respect the local full time residents who if some of you havent noticed dont care for us that much. The local business owners love us for the economy. with the onset of trail connectors being closed in local neighborhoods and backyards because of mod exhausts and young riders who wernt tought to respect or consider other people who arnt riders. I do like the sound of a finley tuned tripple with a can on it. But there is a time and place to pin the throttle and a anti riders backyard or sidestreet is not it. If we respect non sledders they wont rock the boat so hard. These are just my thoughts I could be wrong it has happened before. thanks for letting me put my 2 cents in.

We get a lot of out of town riders here. The majority of them are very polite and respectful. It is the few that are not polite and respectful that cause problems for the many. I hear fewer complaints from older professionals (Drs., Lawyers, Businessmen, ect...) in the area about the noise than I hear about the speed. The locals really dislike how fast people ride the trails. Many are afraid to go out on the trails in their own back yards.
I also think that people on loud sleds behaving badly are more often noticed. So those with the loud sleds build the locals perceptions of snowmobilers. They remember that "loud" sled that cut them off in a corner or that "loud" sled that blew past them doing excessive speeds and pelting them with snow.
There is a sled that rides down our city street frequently. The sled is either piped or has a very loud can. I say piped but I am not sure, sounds tuned and decent. Problem is, they are driving the street at 40+ and it sounds faster because of the pipes. If it was a quiet sled we probably wouldn't notice. Because it is so loud it draws attention to the speed. I even notice it and complain.
That is just one example. I think the perception of sleds with pipes is very hard to overcome. People hear loud and think fast. They dislike the fast. They strike out against the loud.

I think that's one of the best points made...perception is often greater than reality...
