I did the 2" hole drilling thing 4 years ago along with the reed notch and head gasket mods all at the same time on '99 600 triple Vmax deluxe (red head). Definite difference. I'd say sound is not "barely" louder, rather noticibly louder, but myself nor the cops ever had an issue with it. It also seems to have a cool sounding lope at idle on it, like a car with a cam. starts, idles and runs crisper, and takes the gas much quicker w/o any jetting changes. I had it out at -16 last year w/o issues (agree with prev post that it really doesn't affect jetting much if at all. mine was too fat stock anyway). I did foul 1 plug with this machine, and it was after many nights running it in the garage and praying for snow. It was also after the mods and with last year's plugs in it. I've used 87 octane most of the time with no issues (still low compression IMO). You should do it and somewhere on this site is an audio clip of the sound. It is 100% the same as mine. Just do it, and if you don't like it, get another for $10 on ebay. good luck.
