New sled. 1996 VMAX 500. Advice/Tips?

New sled. 1996 VMAX 600. Advice/Tips?

Just bought my first sled, a 96 VMAX 600 with about 2000 on it, guy was asking $1000 for it, dropped it down to $750. This sled runs great, very happy with my purchase. Just wondering though what i should do to it, cleaning, upgrades, and what not. i replaced the spark plugs in it all ready, thats about it. Any tips or advice to keep this running great would be helpful.

Welcome to the site......

Just go through it(clutch's,skid,chain case,carbs,etc.) and check for wore
out parts clean re grease stuff,

pretty bullet proof sled, good price.

try a search lots of info here..
 
piping?? sry...newbie. you mean putting a new exhaust pipe on it??? lol

Yea like i said, it runs fine. Starts on first pull. I would like to raise the rear suspension though. I just need help keeping this thing in great shape. Anything advice would help.

Dont put an aftermarket twin exhaust (piping) system on it.

The reliabilty takes a big nose dive on these sleds if you do that.
 
not really much you can do to the rear skid(suspension) beeing new to sleds like you are, i would pull it out of the sled and tear into it i'm sure there's lots of wore out bushings,fix it regrease evreything with a low temp grease and it'll ride pretty good.
 
Also wondering if i should run premium through it instead of regular. Right now i am just using regular with a yamaha fuel conditioner/cleaner. One of my buddies told me that i should run regular in it and use the oil thats in it and then add my yamalube to it with premium.
 
No need for premium in that sled,just stick with 89 or so and you'll be fine.

I try to run midgrade as its usualy a little better, but you don't have to.

As far as the suspension you can drop a 96 XT suspension in but you will have to drill holes which isn't as easy as it may seem. Just got done looking at my skid and you may want to look at ll the pivot points and check for wear on the bushings costs a little if it only bushings but adds up real quick when the shafts get worn from the bushings being gone.
 
Hey nice sled!!! I think I know who you bought this sled from and it was taken care of very well. Check the rollers in the primary clutch, they go bad quite often. If this is the same sled I am thinking of it has a 600 twin in it disguised as a 500. Check on the side of the motor I am pretty sure its a 600 with a 500 emblem on the top. It's a REAL sleeper!!! He went through the skid a couple months ago and put new hyfax on it. No need for premium or expensive oil. Might want to think about changing the oil in the chaincase. Good luck and congrats, you got a nice low mileage ride there!
 
i just bought one for the gf to replace her puma and the first thing i did was haul the stock shock out of the skid and put a gas shock in there 80 bucks and some time, good improvement over stock.
