Help me compile a list of Vin# for the 81 SRX & Vmax 540's !

Jon, how many of your 81's have "Matching numbers"? Also, I thought Yamaha replaced the ignitions with a "Tamer" version,not because they were defective?? I never heard they had defective gear/water pump boxes. Only that they needed to replace some defective gaskets as shown in the 81 SRX Trail Performance Improvment kit. Can you post that info so I know what to look for.
So you would tell people to avoid numbers matching 81 SRX's????

I HAVE THE 1981 TECH BULLITIN MANUAL RIGHT FROM YAMAHA. THIS COVERS ALL UPDATES DONE TO THE 1981 SRX 440 E . THERE WAS A UPDATE TO THE 1981 SRX INGINTION THAT WAS YES UPDATED UNDER '' TRAIL PERFORMANCE '' KIT TO A MORE TRAIL FRIENDLY DETUNED VERSION. !! 3:16 (yammie tony)
 
I TOTALLY DISAGREE ABOUT THE 1981 SRX 440 E NOT BEING RARE OR COLLECTIBLE IF THE ORIGINAL BOTTOM END NUMBERS STILL MATCHS CHASSIS. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Have checked at the local yamaha dealer here in Norway. I suggest all the european vmax has started at the same VIN number.
The VIN begins at: 8x6-004101, same number on engine and frame.

Thanks, Good information ! Did you happen to ask if all years started at 004101 ? If so, one could Assume....... that there were not more than 4000 made for North America ? I'm fairly sure..... that there were not as many 84's as there were 81SRX's, 83 and 86 540's.
 
Can queck this out later this week. The 81 srx 440e was never relesed in Norway, so cant find anything about it, but vmax from 83 to 86 can i find out. either the 87 vamx was relesed here.

Mark, of the 14 81 SRX's I have sold in the past three to four years only one has had the gear box have a matched VIN to the tunnel. They are quite hard to find, but I again personally feel that finding one does not mean you found a more valuable 81, it means to me that you found one that the guy just did not care enough to take it in to get the updates done to the sled. If it still has the original gear box it probably still has the original Yamaha clutch that was a grenade before they recalled those and put Comet 102's on the sled. Again, rare, yes, more valuable not in my opinion. My buyers prefer to have a sled that is in its best performance and how Yamaha updated it.
 
SO WHAT YOUR SAYING IS IF YOUR 81 SRX HAS MATCHING NUMBERS , THE OWNER DID NOT TAKE THE TIME OR CARE TO GET THE UPDATE DONE ? OK !!! WHAT ABOUT THE THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF 81 SRX OWNERS THAT DID NOT CARE TO BRING THEIR 81 SRX BACK TO THE DEALER FOR THE TRADE- IN RECALL BECAUSE THE MOTORS WERE JUNK. I THINK IT WENT YOUR JUNK BLOWN UP 81 SRX AND $2400 ON A NEW 1982 MODEL. REMEMBER THE YAMAHA REPS WRECKING THESE MOTORS WITH AIR CHISELS. 3:16 (yammie tony)
 
3:16..what was the major beef with the 81 SRX motors...the cranks?My 81 SRX ran very solid and fast out of the box. It was after I took it in because of a re-call that my real problems started to happen.It kept blowing a piston after about a 3 minute run. Remember,this was after the re-call.Before that my SRX was cool.Should of just left it alone.I can remember probably hitting 115 mph on the speedo on straight runs.My wife's uncle had the same sled to and he said they were fast.Now my buddies 78 SRX was FAST!!!!!No one could touch him,I mean nobody.anytime,anywhere.That thing when it finally quite spinning out of the hole accelerated like a rocket.Rumors had it he raced guys for cash anywhere anytime.I heard he was also switching from gas to race fuel(alcohol) on the fly.Probably had an extra small tank hidden somewhere.I really liked my 81 SRX..but love my 02 SRX :)
 
MONSTER, MY 1981 SRX STILL LIVES TODAY. GREAT SLED AND RUNS GREAT. HAD A GREAT YAMAHA DEALERSHIP TELL ME ONCE NOT ALL OF THEM BLEW UP. THESE SLED WERE JUST TO HIGH STRUNG FOR EVERYDAY SNOWMOBILEING. YAMAHA RECALLED THE 81 SRX AND RANG THE DEATH BELL. JUST TOO MANY WARRANTIE ISSUES. SLED WAS A GREAT LAKE RACER BUT NOT A VERY GOOD TRAIL SLED. ENGINE WAS JUST TOO HIGH STRUNG, BUTTERFLY CARBS WERE A NIGHTMARE, CRANKS WERE BAD, THERE WAS OIL ISSUES TO THE CRANK BEARING, INGITION TIMING UPDATES TO CHANGE TIMING, AND ON AND ON. YAMAHA REP CAME IN AND DROVE A INPACT CHISELS RIGHT THROUGH WATER JACKETS ON CYLINDERS. THIS WAS HOW YAMAHA REP MARKED RECALL. 3:16 (yammie tony)
 
One of the wreckers I go to has got to have at least 4 or 5 81's sans engines. next time I'm there, I should pull all the serial numbers and report them here for you. G.

I also have 2 motor crankcases with # RT499-010478 and RT499-010609
I guess Yamaha made many 82s

Those are 500 SRX´s partnumbers. Any idea where the rest of sleds are?

Ricky, The 010 would be part of the Vin# only, the 478 and 609 are part of the serial # as far as the quanity produced. Thanks for your help !
