I've got two other sleds that are completely different rides than this but here goes...

I've got a 1999 Vmax 600 triple deluxe and it seems to be one of the most powerful sleds I've ridden. It's loud, and when you goose it, the track breaks free and the tail end can slide. Great fun in the woods. The skis track true and I've got them shimmed. The sled is amazing but I'm finding it hard to plant the power. Do these things always break loose when you romp it?

Also, at a slow speed there's a rhythmic thump...it's not the drive belt, I thought I'd flattened it in one spot by the thump, but that's not it.

It seems to go away after about ten MPH and the things runs awesome. It's studded and I wondered if they were hitting, but I don't think so.

Any thoughts? I'm not familiar with how to adjust the suspension, if that's what I need to hook up...but I'm sure I can find someone local who is.

Any help is appreciated.

Yammies stock track's are less then desirable, you may want to go aftermarket with a taller lug, a rip saw or hacksaw are some good ones
to look into.

on the thumping issue raise the rear of the sled and run the motor till the
track spins some and look and listen down there, should be able to tell
where it's coming from..

track to tight??

welcome to the site....

I get the same thing on my yami not sure what it is but same speeds etc... Just replaced the track and bearings and such in the skid, it may be that the track it too tight however i think mines too loose at the moment as its stretching. Please do post if you find out what it is. Not sure on yours but mine doesn't do it with the rear in the air or when it first starts seems like ice buildup of some sort that begin to rub on something in there one you ride a while.

What do you have for a track currently? Lug height studs etc... If you ride on hard pack a good amount of studs usually 144 will keep it straight however in loose snow you want a 1" lug which will help immensly.

Thanks.

I'm at work but will check it when I get home. I don't know the track but assume it's stock. It's studded and the studs to help. In the woods it's awesome and it's fun to powerslide the tail, but the thing is a squirrel when you goose it.

As for the thump, one other clue is that when I hit the brakes, there is an initial clunk like as the caliper engages, it moves with the rotor a bit...like it's loose? the brakes work great, just the initial engagement clunk.

I agree, it seems like ice and is totally not there are cruising speed. only when starting up from a stop and only when going slowly.

Thanks again. -JT

i think i might have a answer to the thump my 1998 zl-500 had a recall for warped brake rotor it thumped when you got going and slowed down not noticed under speed 35-up after the recall all was fine .

My Mountain Max has done this since it was new. Clean all of the ice out and there is still noise, but it goes away when the back end is up in the air. I went through all my bearings, couldn't find anything. I've been thinking it is the track bumping on the top of the front shock in the skid as there is rub marks on the track. When the speed picks up there is enough pull from the drive shaft to keep the track tighter. What do you guys think, or am I way off?

Scary but that could be what it is, my old shock (front was install wrong by the previous owner) causing the shcrader valve to wear off without hleaking thankfully, however this may have been the noise before i put it back together i wonder if it is the noise now? If so i wonder what can be done shy of tightening the track more.

Thanks for all the information

I appreciate it. I'll check out the brake rotor but I'm kinda leary about digging too deeply as the sled runs fine and I'm not certain there is anything seriously wrong. I'm going to try to get my local mechanic (who's in my snowmobile club) to look it over, but it seems to run well. Just kicks loose under full throttle. Guess I should leave well enough alone.

I really wish I knew more about these things...I'll just keep reading the boards.

Thanks again.

most aftermarket has them you have to drop the rear of skid or just take the whole skid out and follow directions that come with kit try shade tree they had them for cheap at one time
