put the phazer back together after rebuilding the motor with .040 over heads, pistons and rings. Finally got her to fire up after bypassing the TORS. Problem now is its only running on the pto side cylinder. With the plugs out I am getting spark from both wires and both plugs but when I put the plugs back in It doesnt seem to be firing in the mag side. I can take the plug wire off the mag side and the sled stays running but if I take it off the pto side the motor will die, however it will stay running(but real crappy) if I keep working the throttle. I have torn everything back apart except the heads.Carbs are spotless, fuel pump is clean and working. After running the motor for a good 5 minutes the pto side plug is hot as heck and looking kind of rich, the mag side plug is slightly warm and clean as a whistle but wet. The piston top is clean as well. Anybody got any ideas? Please help Its a 1999 phazer 500
 
just got done for the night. I tried lots of plugs same result. Did a compression test and both cylinders came back at 115 and didnt leak off, hooked up a spark tester and I am getting spark to both cylinders. So I am going back to the carbs again. I shouldnt have to rejet or anything just going 40 over and no other mods should I? Any chance it could have something to do with the reeds? I had them apart and cleaned the up? I know the carbs are getting gas because both bowls had the same amount in them when I opned them up. What should I be looking for in the carbs? Thanks in advance
 
switch coils or plug wires if its a double coil and see if it fires on other side, then you will have narrowed it down
 
Here's a long shot...from mid last year until last week I had an intermitant problem with the #3 cylinder on my SRX. It seemed to foul plugs, miss or run on two cylinders. Finally figured out it was the wire to the coil not connecting all the time...the little round brass wire connector. It looked fine but, didn't connect well.
Just something to look at.

I tried switching plug wires and still the mag side doesnt seem to be working. After letting it run for about 5 minutes the plug comes out looking brand new and damp. Some time this morning I will be tearing the carbs apart again and then when I go back to where the sled is I will try to get the fuel filter out and check that. Any secrets to getting at the filter?

Sounds like you really should try this,it sounds to me its not gettin gas,no offense but maybe you put the float in backwards or bent the float out of adjustment? you really should try this, pouring a little gas in that cylinder.
 
well right now I cant try pouring gas in the cylinder because I have the carbs off and I am 50 miles away from the sled. I will take apart the carbs one more time and triple check everything then later this afternoon after my bowling tournement I will put the sled together again and see what happens. If no go then I will try putting gas in the cylinder. I make mistakes so no offense will be taken.
 
The plug being wet signals that it may be running rich on that side.
With the sled running, take a needle nose pliers and squeeze the hose shut that runs from the fuel pump to the crankcase and hold it for a minute or two. If it starts to run on both cylinders, the fuel pump diaphragm is ruptured which causes gas to feed through the hose to that cylinder.

If it is bad, Yamaha sells only the complete pump. You can get a diaphragm kit from an aftermarket source or from a different sled manufacturer. Put a scratch mark on the pump from top to bottom before you take it apart so that it is aligned correctly when reassembled.
 
Well here the latest tore into the carbs and they are spotless. went to moms house and put the carbs back on and started it up. Let it warm up about 5 minutes and tried pulling the pto side wire off and sure enough it just stops running. Put the wire back on, start it and pull the mag side wire it stays running with no change. Pulled the plugs and the mag side is still new except its wet,pto side golden brown. Checked the plugs to see if there was spark, the first pull there was the next 5 there wasnt. Tried another plug in the same boot and no spark. Tried the other boot and there was spark on the first two pulls but that was it. Put a plug in each boot and there was spark from each plug. Put the plugs back in and started it up and let it run, while it was running I pulled off whatever you call it on the carb boots and could see gas going into both heads. Shut it off took the plugs out and the mag side looked brand new still just wet. AAAAAAHHHHHHH
 
looks like a electrical prob? try new coil/boots??, check the whole elec.
system out, i can't see it being carburetion issue now...

i would get your self a service manual and start going through the
electrical, do your check's
 
cant imagine it runs well on 1 cyl. it sounds funny but when i started my srx this year it would'nt run and the plugs were wet. went out on a limb and added more fuel and shazam it was running. i guess not enough fuel or poor ratios? have you ohm'ed out you're caps, check all of the wiring maybe you unplugged something when you pulled the carbs. ohm out the coils.
