vintage vs. new the challenge, the build !!

Goal - to build a trail sled/ ditch banger with the most hp without reducing reliability.

starting block - the engine is torn down to the crank both cylinder jugs have some scuffing heads are good have yet to check the crank. everything is stock except the 102c clutch

the missing parts - everything in the bellhousing is missing except the stator and the recoil.

what has to be done?
- bore the cylinders over .20 or .40? also need to know if i have chrome bore?
- locate pistons and hardware
- rebuild clutch
- (i know im missing something)?


Now the challenge - i have always been and vintage fan weather it be car or snowmobiles and i have a friend who is nothing but a modern vehicle man.
his challenge to me was an ice drag against a bone stock 2001 mxz 600 with 96 studs against my srx 440 that can be slightly modded. The wager = $100 and drinks on the loser all night. Being a member of the male gender i agreed.

so heres what im am looking for !

i need to know what distance drag would be to my advantage and the gearing / clutching specs i will need

now i need some opinions on mods, here are my ideas

- aaen trail pipes
- larger carbs i.e 38mm
- studded track how many picks??
- clean ports up
- weight reduction
-?????????

i need all the opinions and advise i can get!
i know the challenge may be a little far fetched but i at least want to be able to put up a fight and show that vintage is still alive!!!

parts resources would be great to .
any help would greatly be appreciated, pics of the cylinders will be up soon

sorry a 1980 yamaha srx the slowest of em all hahah but the best looking in my opinion
 
I THINK ITS POSSIBLE. BUT YOUR 80 SRX WILL HAVE TO BE SPOT ON AND THAT MXZ 600 HAS TO BE OFF BY A MILE. FOR STARTERS FORGET AAEN TRAIL PIPES. STOCK WAY BETTER. 3:16 (yammie tony)

I raced my brothers 1980 srx with my 2001 sno pro the sleds are dead even from the bottom to the top end. I can beat indy 500's basically any thing up to six hundred cc's without powervavles. But a 600 ho powervalve motor will take me on the top end, I'm pretty sure that 2001 mxz has powervalves and those add like twenty horsepower. My brothers srx is stock except clutched up to 4000 rpm. He makes 145lbs compression on each cyl. My sled makes 150. His sled runs really strong the track is reversed and studded. When you nail it, it pulls hard at 4500 rpm it lifts both skis off the ground. If your sled was mine here is what i would doo. Have the motor rebuilt. Mill the heads for about 180 lbs of compression and run 110 octane race fuel (i can get torco around here for 4.50 a gallon) then clutch it up to 4500 rpm. I think then you would have a real good shot at him. P.S> My brother is going to run his SRX up mt brighton hill climb this year, if he chickens out I'm gonna run it for him...
 
thanks buckswahler your making me feel a little more confident about this race. so since he could pull me up top what length of distance should i set since the ball is in my court. i was thinking around 660 feet? ive never heard of reversing the track is that just a method of gaining more life out of your track??
 
Yamaha tracks are designed to lift you on top of the snow, they are therefore angled with a gentle ramp design that doesn't get much bite. On the frontside the track has a right angle, If you reverse the track it gets much better traction but doesn't stop quite as well. I reversed the track on my exciter with no studs and it will lift one ski on hard pack..., it gets way better traction, even in powder. I got stuck twice last year, in deep ditches, haven't got stuck once this year...
660ft is prolly your best bet... I thought for sure i would beat him out of the hole but whoever hit the lever first one the race, it was that close. I have 1.375 inch sno cross track, studs 110 octane fuel and my timing advanced all the way, and i typically beat larger sleds, I have never been beat by any five hundred. But that srx and that sno pro were dead even... I may have to buy it off him...

Those cylinders are sleeved and actually look very good. They may just clean up. Send them out to have them checked and get a '77 SRX port job. (Looks done already?) Cut the heads. Put on Aaen silenced 77 mod pipes and big carbs. 48's preferred or somewhere around 44-48's. Run good fuel and get it clutched. You'll be good to go!

whats the mapping for a 77 port job and how can i tell if it has been done?? are the mod pipes the open stinger aaen makes ?? if i was to stay with the stock pipes what the biggest size carb i could install
 
For your plan, forget the stock pipes. Most important is the exhaust port. Then the intake. Then the transfers. It looks like someone did them all and a good job too. I won't know until you measure them. See how wide the exhaust port is and how far down it starts from the top. Compare it to a stock cylinder or a 77 SRX cylinder.
 
ill have to get on that i picked up the sled in part for cheap so im not to sure about the history
 
the race will be taking place on lake Sinclair, i live in the area of windsor ontario . the ice this year hasn't been so good so it looks as tho it will have to be next year but i plan to have it video taped and posted one here as soon as it happens.

so here is where i stand
i have 8G0 cylinders with the 77 port job
- 8j0 heads
and 8k2 carbs (junk)
if i still plan to keep the stock pipes on could i use vm40 carbs off a 9700 blizzard or 40mm carbs off a 670 ski-doo?? withs the difference with the power jet im always hearing about?
