I've only had my 1998 one season, but I do believe it's the last sled I'll ever own. It's a 700. More power than I'll ever need. I'm even willing to overlook the lack of electric start. Three pulls max from dead cold and she starts, once you know how to handle the choke. I've even custom made a trailer that fits this SRX specifically. I might get adventurous one day and put in reverse, or maybe even try to custom fit electric start. I've heard the e start has been done, but I keep hitting a dead end trying to get information.

From what I've read the only issue is where to mount a battery.

jkenosh, here's another post that might help:
shortstop20 said:1998 SRX 700: First year for this sled, they had bad cranks from the factory. Almost all have been fixed by now but have your dealer check out the VIN # before you buy one to make sure it's been done. Black bellypan, blue hood on these sleds.
1999 SRX: Cranks from the factory were stronger than the '98s. '99 and all years after have Blue bellypan, blue hood. Graphics are a little different than the '98s. I believe this was the year that they relocated the servo to a different spot also??
2000 SRX: SRX motor was changed for about 7 more HP. Dual headlights, new graphics, this year SRX is basically all blue.
2001 SRX: Trailing arms, radius rods, and tunnel are silver instead of blue like previous years. New brake disc, first year for separate hand/thumb warmer controls. I believe 2001 was the first year for the 300W magneto also.
2002 SRX: New graphics and DCS(Detonation Control System) was added.
I'm sure I'm forgetting some things but this will get you started.

The 2000 is the one with the 300 watt magneto though. That's why the 2000 was the first year to have the dual headlights. Not 2001.

2000-2002 srx's are the same in terms of power.

Thanks Yama. I can be pretty resourceful and I will find a spot for that battery, even if I have to mount it under the seat. I know the pipes do take up a lot of room, but who would have it any other way? I've tried to get info before and I got as far as hearing that Boomer had done it, and then the trail went cold. Anyway, I should really start a new thread and let people voice their opinions on best SRX. Again, me: 1998. But I'm biased. LOL.Yama49601 said:From what I've read the only issue is where to mount a battery.

True if all things are equal, but if you want to talk bone stock ,out of the crate ,the fastest is probably the 2000. It was jetted down more than the others. Easy to fix on the other years though. The 2000-2002 models are quite stronger than the 98-99 models stock for stock.
Which is better?? Depends what you are looking for. Flat our lake speed goes to the SRX hands down. Tight twisties the Viper might be a better choice. They are both great trail carvers IMO. If you plan on doing mods, piping etc. on a Viper......get the SRX.

so do the 02's have more HP and top speed stock?
As Yama49601 posted, the 00' - 02's have same HP, which is to say 7 or so more than the 98' -99'sboot02srx said:so do the 02's have more HP and top speed stock?

The only difference really between 2000, 2001, and 2002 is the 02 has DCS and all three years have different graphics. 2001 was jetted a little fatter I believe

I owned a 99 srx and now have a 2001. If you are going to trail ride I would recommend a 2001 with an 1-1/4 track. My riding buddy has the first year viper that he purchased new. It's really smooth and fairly bulletproof, but it's a little under powered and IMHO the stock exaust sound is boring and somewhat annoying. Guys really like their 2002 srx's but that DCS makes some people a little parinoid. Also, if you want a viper to run with a stock SRX, you will need some pretty deep pockets to do it right not to mention the 7-8 mpg if your lucky!
Guys that ride SRX's are like a cult, I get more thumbs up and smiles from SRX guys. My buddy and I went 90 miles after work last night and we were pulled over in the middle of nowhere when a guy on an 01 srx went flying by, saw my sled and turned around to come back and shoot the breeze for 20 minutes.
I think the thumbs up I get is them saying "ya, mines badass too!" LOL

I'm curious...what troubles are you having with the apex? I've been looking at those a little lately
That's what I was thinking as well. To me, I would think the Apex would be a better snowmobile than the SRX. Great power, better suspension, electric start, reverse and it's a 4-stroke!RTYsxv said:I'm curious...what troubles are you having with the apex? I've been looking at those a little lately

True, but the srx has slot car handling on groomed trails that the appex cant match. The srx will always be known as the king of triple triples which makes it cool to own.Ive rode both the appex and srx and the srx is so much more fun to ride(when the trails are smooth). And that sound, nothing sounds better than a srx with a bender can.

I love my 02 SRX and will never part with it; found it at a dealer in Iowa back in 04 with 368 miles on it. Some jack*** decided that his buddies all rode big bore 'Cats and that his SRX needed to go.
His loss is my gain!
I put the CB Performance light weight components (everything-swaybar-skis, trailing arms, windage plate) on it to cut weight, had them do some clutch work too. The sled is a rocket on rails!
