Exciter SX bogging issue

When riding my exciter sx at 3/4 throttle or more it runs great. Slowing down to below 3/4 throttle it starts to bogg down and flood itself. Anyone know what causes this to happen? My thoughts are that the fuel pump needs to be replaced.

sound like your carbs need to be cleaned. do you have a manual for your sx? i just bought one and need a manual. what are you runnig for jets?
 
I just had the carbs cleaned and new jets put in them. I have 160 main jets and 60 pilots. I have psi twin pipes so I have to run a higher jet than normal. As far as I know, there is no manual for the SX.

160 mains in SD? You sure, sounds rich to me, those things came rich from the factory, If I remember correctly, they came with 155s and we would run 150s, and never ran 160's with pipes down here. There was a manual for an SX, I have one.
 
maybe that's my problem then. I'll have to get some 150 and 50's tommorrow and see what happens. Where'd you get your manual at? I'd really like to get one. The PSI pipes were on the sled when i buoght it so i have no idea what the clutch or carb settings are supposed to be.

i only have the specs for single sx pipe and twins for the 87 to 90 exciter sorry!

As I remember with the twins, we used stock pilots and either 156.3's or 157.5's.


The manual I have is a factory one, they did make one for that sled, I will have to go look at it, I don't remember if it is an Exciter manual with the SX added to it or a seperate manual for that sled, but it has a pic of the SX on the cover. I had to pull it out not to long ago to look up some wiring for someone on here.

Where did u get the manual from? I have one for 88-90. I checked the jets last night and found that I've got 155 mains and 55 pilots.
 
that is stock jets for sx, the setup from psi with porting and single pipe is 55 pilots ,move your needle clip to 4th pos and 160 mains airscrew 1 1/2 turns that might be a good starting point

Just got back from riding. I left the main jets at 160 and pilots at 55. I adjusted the air screws to 1.5 turns out. It rode great. I only rode for about 45 min and the wind chill was -15 so I hope longer rides in warmer air doesn't cause any problems.
 
After running two tanks of gas through the motor, it started to bog down again, but not as bad as before. It stalled on me once after I let it sit and idle for about a minute and then gave it gas. If I slowly accelerate from a stop, I can keep the motor running, but if I "floor" it, the motor bogs down and almost stalls. Mid to top end is great, no problems at all. I think I'm going to try 50 pilots and see what happens.
 
ok, with 52.5 pilots, 160 mains, and air screws two turns out, it still bogs down but not enough to stall the engine. Should I try 50 pilots or turn the air screws in some? Also, how do I adjust the oil? The oil is turned way up. Might be causing some of my problem.
 
Not exactly an Exciter wizzard but I think the Sx had flat side carbs if so you don't have air screws but fuel screws. Screw in lean out richer. You might be going the wrong way with the piolets.
 
o.k you rode it with the 55 pilots and said it rode great.(why did you change them?) so you dropped the pilots and now you have a bog, run it again and when it bogs pull the choke and see if that helps, if it does you are too lean on pilots. go back to the 55 pilots and play with the screw settings (1/4 turn increments)
 
The first time I rode it was good, but I didn't ride very long. The second time I rode for quite a while longer and then I started having problems again. I really think that the oil is the main problem. When I pulled the plugs last night, they were covered with oil. Wouldn't oil fouled plugs cause bogging till the oil burns off?

those carbs have air screws. 1 1/2 turns is stock. they dont have fuel screws on the bottom. i dont believe you need that big of pilot jet i would run no bigger than 50s.
