How much steering play is ok?

My dad has bought a used 1994 VMAX 600. The steering is darting left and right and is very hard to control above 40 MPH. Shims were mentioned in another thread, but this sled has about 1" of steering slop each way in the handlebar ends. I can see the idler arm is loose in it's pivot and also the rods ends themselves are a bit loose as well as the knuckle that the rod ends connect to at the ski's are loose. I am assuming this is too much slop, any thoughts?
 
Common problem on that era of vmax if not desasembled and cleaned
then greased,bushings and collars need to be replaced to do it right.

you'll need part's- 39,40,52,7, in all joints,replace them and she'll be tight
again..

Thanks for such a quick response. Is there a bushing in the idler arm pivot as well? Because that whole assembly rocks off it's centerline when the handlebars are turned abck and forth. Thanks again!
 
Yes it is #6 that is moving off it's axis a lot when the handlebars are turned right and left. I think it is called the idler arm. Is there a replaceable bushing for that or is #6 the replaceable part?
 
not sure if there's a bush,i'd say probably not,,pull your's up and out,mabie the shaft on 6 is just wore bad..
 
Sorry Hay, My link didn't work. For some reason Yamaha does not list that bi-metal bushing for a 94 but they do list it for a 95. The 95 part will work fine on your sled. That idler arm bushing is a two piece and only runs about $24.00 for both.
 
'95 have it yes,,it's 32..it may or may not work in your app. you'll have
to see if there's a cut out for that bush

Good one Daman! I couldn't get the diagram to copy! I'm not 100% sure either but I would think that the 94 is identical to the 95 and 96. I wouldn't think that yamaha would just shove the idler arm in the frame without a bushing! It would pretty much suck to have to replace the whole frame! My guess would be that they just didn't list it for the 94 model year.
