Helmet type?

Looking to buy a new helmet this season and was wondering what people think of the MX style helmets. I've always had a fullface style helmet, but I'm thinking about going with the mx style. With the proper inserts are the MX styles fairly warm, or would I regret making the switch?

I ride about 50/50 trail and off trail.

I Use A Hjc Mx Helmet With Quick Straps On My Goggles, I Really Like It But On A Real Cold Day I Wear My Old Yamaha Snoforce.
 
I love my HJC mx style helmet, there a lighter then a full face, if you go with an mx style look at the weight of the helemet, HJC best one is the ac-x2 its the lightest but retails for 179.99 with out googles and quick straps.
 
It depends on your budget. I ride in Whistler in the Mountains and everyone uses MX helmets. Come to think of it I have never seen a full face helmet. I use a Fox carbon fibre. It is so light you cant even tell you have it on and Spy goggles that never fog. I would recomend this, its a bit pricy but after a hard day your neck will thank you. Also it never gets that cold out here and even on those real cold days I wear a thin balaclava under it and Im as warm as can be. Also I ride pretty hard and a MX allows you to breath better than a full face.
 
on my second skidoo modular. you can usually pick them up used for 200. i had my first one for 5years and sold it for 150 with scratched lens. bought one on ebay for 200 that was a year old. the only time you will need a heated shield with this helmet is when riding in freezing rain. any onther time you can breath hard as you want out of your mouth.
great for stop and talking as you dont have to remove.

I guess that's my real question... Are they really that cold when wearing a balaclava along with the proper face piece? I won't be doing any mountain riding, but I do a lot of off trail stuff... As of right now, I'm leaning towards the mx style.

I wear a MX style bucket, along with one of the guys i ride with, and when it gets really cold, (-20 to -30, Northern Ontario trips) you need to have a good wind resistant balclava on and a nose/mouth cover on, as the wind has a bit more nip in it. The balclava i use is intended for firemen, it's made to go under a firemans bucket. It's made of nomex material (fire resistant) and lets no wind pass through when speeding down a lake at WOT. At those temps. & speeds, just make sure you have no exposed skin showing!

I have no complaints since i converted from the closed faced bucket.
 
I prefer the mx style helmet, too. Like others said though, when it gets well below zero, you want to make sure no skin is exposed 'cause frostbite sets in really fast. I'll usually switch to the sno force and electric shield around -15F.

I ride with a HJC open face and scott goggles. Wore the helmet all last year down to -30 with no problems. Just be sure to cover up. I don't think I can go back to a full face helmet now.
 
I live in Maine and wear a sno-x helmet and have ridden in temps -30 last year. I wear a thin coolmax balaclava and my helmet has a high nose/mouth gaurd. I never got cold. Love the helmet and the no fog issues. only issue is if you are riding with people who like to stop every few miles its a little more work to put on and take off only because of the goggles and balaclava. and when you stop and take your goggles off the moisture gets in your goggles. but i would never go back.
 
I've worn a full face helmet my whole life. However this year I'm going to try something new so I'm going to try out a MX style helmet. Hopefully I'm making the right decision and wont freeze. :o| :o|
 
I bought one of the KBC from Coffey Dist. last year. It's a 2 in 1 helmet. MX style and full face with an electric shield. Electric shield in really cold weather did'nt seem to be warm enough to keep clear so switched it to the MX way, have'nt changed it back since. I think I paid 299 toward end of season.

mx style hjc with smith sno warp star airflow goggles and a balaclava underneath. wore in -35 in tug hill.. and thanks to goggles i was the only one who could see and wasnt icing up.

i got a little cold with it in -35 but not that bad.
 
Helmet

I suffered for years with my glasses fogging up. Seems there was not a good solution. Open face or closed. I tried a Modular and have had great luck. Only thing when riding at -10 to -15 the breather tube froze up and I had a hard time breathing. Only had to stop and break the chunks out and was good to go. I love the modular. ;)!
 
I wear an HJC MX style helmet with a No-Fog Mask, and it works great in all weather. The only time I have a problem fogging up is when I stop to talk and don't take the goggles off. If I had dual paned goggles that would not be a problem though.
 
I have a HJC Sky Max with the ele. sheild and i just love it and i stacy nice and warm to al i wear glasses and they don't fog up anymore. :WayCool:
 
O's SRX, Where did you pick up that balaclava? Sounds like the ticket on those colder days. How large is the eye opening? I like them small to help protect my nose and temple area.

Ajsxr, Go with the open face and goggles, you won't be disappointed. I was affraid of the colder temps inside the helmet and frost bite, but it actually cools you down when riding hard.

My only complaint is riding behind a group of people there is a tendency to breath in more fumes from the sledders ahead. Simple solution, ride up front. Better view anyways!

Mx helmet, and quick straps are the way to go... Every time it gets past -10, somebody is asking me to lend out my goggles, as the electric shield froze up. Need I say more?
