Rode all weekend and it was fine. Then rode for about 45 minutes this morning when I found a real nice alfalfa field. Did about 6 runs between 1/2 to full throttle. The runs was about 1/2 mile long. The snow was about 12" deep too so there was lots for cooling. I could feel my right foot getting very hot and could start to smell soemthing, not sure what though. i rode it home about a mile and took these photos of the top of the muffler, under the pipes. There was also a pile of the same stuff in the belly pan under the muffler. What the heck is it? I don't think it was blowing up, here is a photo of the plugs too. I was using premium fuel too. Thanks for the assistance.

strange stuff.Something was cooking.Exhaust vent was plugging up and the heat stayed inside can more.Anymore of that and you would of been on fire, and not just your foot.Better check your pistons to.Maybe you were melting the coatimg on your pistons, plugs don't look to good color wise.Stuff oozed thru the exhaust, baked on to the can.Now your pistons are in your exhaust can...lol

did you have any discolor at the head pipes?i had this happen on a old phazer.it turnrd out over the summer mice made a nest in the muffler.appearantly it was way in there because it worked ok for about a month, then all clogged up at the outlet.

Exact thing happened to me last year. I was running 3-4 miles across the lake 3/4 throttle and all of a sudden it felt like i fouled a plug so i pulled off the lake. Took my helmet of and right away i could smell something burning, I poped the hood and sure enough she was on fire! I was running in about 20-25 inches of powder, and like blue said, the exhaust outlet must have meen plugged and held the heat in the pipes, The fire took out the belly pan, all three pipes, wiring harness, recoil, collant hoses, and all the foam under the hood, all in all it was an expensive lesson learned.

your playing with fire boys.Plug up them outlets in the summer.Mice will find the most tiny opening for making their next.Use moth balls everywhere and poison pellets to get rid of them.I know one year thet started to munch on my SXR air fliter and ate the fine mesh on the sleds cover that goes over the windshield.Damn critters...hate them and have a lot out here in the country.

that'll teach ya for going into man Alfalfa field.Done that and the alfalfa really traps the snow so you have to pin it.But the SRX is not a deep snow sled and you are working it good.Even with my SXR600 with 1 1/4 track,I have it pinned and was starting to rachet I found out.Had to tighten up track.Imagine the heat you are creating in the clutches to running it full bore in the powder.SRX is not set up for this, but it is your sled.....lol Lucky you didn't blow up the motor, but you better check it out now.

Thanks for the replies guys. I hope I didn't hurt my baby, I have done that many times on other sleds without problems.

I don't know what the white specks are, I didn't see them when I looked at the plugs, only after the photo was taken.

There was no discoloration that I could see on the header pipes and I don't think mice would have made a nest in the muffler. I've ridden quite a bit this year already without problems. The other thing I was thinking about was that the fuel was on empty and since this alfalfa field has nice rolling hills, my skis would'nt touch until the next hill. Maybe the fuel was not getting to the pickup and leaning out.
On second thought I had it happen once across a lake with 6" of snow and 3/4 to full throttle for about 1/2 mile (didn't get as hot that time though).

Jensen: was your motor alright though?

You're right Blue, gonna have to stay out of them alfalfa fields, oat fields only I guess!

First thing you need to do is remove your pipes and see whats happening. My thoughts are mouse nest but you wont know untill you take them off and shake them get a small flashlight too. Id also take you header pipes off and look at the pistons plus while your in there clean and adjust your power valves.

Yeah I guess that is what I'll have to do. Do you guys think that it would be a mouse nest though, even after hundreds of miles of riding already this year. It only does it if I run it a bit harder too, wide open runs through fields and large open areas.

It did sounds like something was cooking in the muffler though, a small fire even!

thanks

That good to hear. This is a very strange problem...if there isn't a mouse nest in the muffler, would an exhaust shield be a good idea?

Me Too!!!!

I did the exact same thing. There is a rubber bumper under there and it caught fire just like mine and it helped the cover melt right above it.

those plugs do not look good at all, i'd definately be doing a comp. test on all 3 and comparing, those white specks look like aluminum i.e. parts of your piston. could have had something in the carb and she leaned out on ya....

tears of sorrow or tears of joy..what's it going to be

All I know,I don't want to be there when you open her all up for a look.Keep a box of Kleenex with ya bud.

Take the silencer off and start the sled and make sure exhaust pressure is basically even out of all three pipes.
Then inspect the silencer for any rattles and rodents. R&R

Hmmm....do you know what the cause was? Sounds exactly the same.

I hope not! Funny thing is I couldn't see them when looking at them, it was as if the flash of the camera brought them out. Either way I'll be doing a compression test.
