Ever had this happen?

This is my wife's 98 MM 600 twin. Happened this past Sunday about 3 miles into our ride. I was so pleased! The starter gear on the back of the primary decided to let loose like a hula-hooping buzzsaw and cause some carnage. I guess it's ultimately my own fault. I haven't had a new battery in that sled for over a year, if I had, the gear would have probably came off on start-up instead of at 50 mph.

It was a recall item on 98 and 99's. My 99 500 dlx was recalled. See if it was ever done, and then see if yamaha will cover it if it wasn't. Maxdlx
 
I am the second owner of the sled, and I think the older gentleman that I purchased it from has since passed. I will investigate tho, man that would be sweet if I could get it fixed at little or no cost to me...thanks for the info.
 
If I remember right, on the recall they used a stronger type of locktight.
Mine also did it but caught it in time. The 1st time it came loose I put it back on myself & told the dealer about it but he said yamaha knows nothing about it. The 2nd time it came loose I took it to the dealer & told him to keep it till it get's fixed for good.
 
They used different bolts and stronger lock tite. You dealer should be able to run the serial # to see if the update was done. Maxdlx
 
Great news! I called a dealer (Meyer's in Ishpeming), told them exactly what happened, they checked the VIN and it is an un-registered sled with no recall work done to it. Meyer's called Yamaha, then called me back, and told me to bring it in. Sounds like Yamaha is going to cover the fix!! I just can't believe it.... :yrules:
 
For one you took it to one of the best Yamaha dealers there is. Glad to hear that Yamaha is standing behind it. Maxdlx

looks like I need to have a VIN run on my 97 venture 600.....

there are a few recalls/ fixes to see if they were done. namely this one, and the piston ring issue.


I am suprised that yami honors this recall for 10 + years back. Hopefully this is not just a dealer going out of his way to make a customer happy, and that the order came from Yami themselves.
 
Great to hear that you got it covered by Yamaha!. I once was told that someone was killed one time when the starter gear came loose and that the recall was to loosen the bolts and put them back on with loctite 648.. but I dunno if it`s true.. .
I`m glad someone didn`t get hurt!.
 
I'm glad too. My wife was riding the sled! And she had the common sense to kill the motor as soon as she heard the noise, otherwise there may have been even more damage. I have 'trained' her well. :)
 
Im surprised it didnt kill the sled instantly for her. The same thing happened this year on my brother in laws sled and if he had taken the time to look it over first it could have been saved. Leading up to the incident it was making a wicked tinging sound at idle, as soon as you got on the throttle it would go away. In this case not all the bolts came out so once the gear was able to slide forward enough it caught the starter and took that out as well.(locked the sled up solid) I originally was on the right trail when I thought when it happened probably the starter was on the way out and then came apart catching the start gear on the clutch but it ended up being the other way around. I ended up popping off the clutch and then removed the pinion gear on the started since it was stuck sideways in the starter. I just put the clutch back on and we said the heck with it. That sled starts so easy. Even when cold it usually starts first pull. Very nice sleds those are. I always wanted to buy it off him for my wife but shes not into riding.
