Better to use a bit more oil than blow the engine to save a few ounces. Some of the Ventures had bad or worn pumps. I have used the Shell Advanced as well as CTC stuff which smokes more. You could try synthetic (heard they run real clean but 2x $$$)
The dealer said the pump has a mark on it and the arm and to adjust it at full trottle to line them up. I had a look last time but could not see what he was referring to and left it and went sledding. Used oil and lots of gas and then the low oil light came on. Gas station was sold out oil so I road home and got some from a neighborough and tooled around a while longer. Last run of the season. Joy...riding this sled. Just need to get better skis and carbides for next year. Watching out for a sale or good used deal.
Perogies any one? Kubasa maybe... ha ha
As far as I can see, the plunger in the pump would be the only part that would need to be replaced. Ding, where do you find parts for the pump?Ding said:I once investigated the internals of these oil pumps with the intention of rebuilding one, I found it much easier to find a new or slightly used oil pump instead. There are only a few internal parts available as service parts.
Yes mine has the marks look you'll see them, well what happens is thetripplec said:DAMAN
Do you see the DOT or marks on yours? For alignment. I didn't but will have another closer look this summer. On another note, it seam strange that a part which has oil in it and passes and controls the flow can actually wear out when bathed with fresh oil constantly. Hmmm Did yammy redesign this pump and are they engine specific.

My 500 was not within the serial number range of sleds with bad pumps, but had high oil usage. The pump was replaced during the 3 year warranty period. Now the replacement pump has also worn, and the sled is taking an obscene amount of oil. The consumption had been getting higher for some time, but I did not do anything about it because the sled has had engine problems and I figured the extra oil would be added insurance. But I need to do something now because it has gotten ridiculous.
I have not heard of the other brands of sleds having this problem and as far as I have known them over the years, the Mikuni pumps have been very reliable and trouble free.
Anyone have any more information on why the pumps on some Yamaha's do this?

If I had the equipment, I would weld the plunger nipple up and turn it down to shape. The idea would be to use a type of rod that would not wear like the original metal does.
And yes, the 2 cylinder 500 and 600's from 1994 -on, drink a lot of gas and oil, even when the oil pump is working like it should.
Yes that as been done on mine, the cable is adjusted to the end and I even bent the cable mount bracket way down to lessen the travel. It still is way rich on oil.daman said:One should try to re-adjust the pump before replacing,
