I have the dyno sheet from my 77 SRX 98.9HP. I sent my stock SSR pipes to Hauck and had them modified years ago. He took material off the neck of the pipes near the cylinders and said it was good for 5+ HP. Never raced the SSR so I could not tell you what it did. Jeff Wurl

Ya….I lived in Niagara on the Lake..they sell winter golf memberships there..like NO SNOW!
I kept my son in individual and team sports and didn’t let him race till University..he won..what he did. So we quit that.
So..3 years ago we moved to Muskoka beside a lake! You may have seen the local boys run out there and at the W. Series Coulson’s 292 jet..several guys from here.
I moved into the loop real fast..as the older ski doo race director lives here…and..and introduced me.
I got my contacts at Yamaha Canada to confirm a buddy had the 1st ever 77 SRX preproduction sled built..he sold it to a guy on this forum. It was supposed to be squashed in the day.
So..with this group..we have 3 ovals laid out..one being at my place. And we spend a lot of time playing at that…however..I don’t have an oval sled. So..the guys let me drive sleds like the twin tracker you saw.
My track is bumpy..as I want the pounding and ripping fun.
So….next..as you suggested….I was hired by Bailey Motorsports..to race tune the team snoX sleds as a paying job. The schedule is very heavy. We got them at the top and several podiums overall last year. There are too many sleds to really focus on one.
Ovals..the best classes out there is the Formula 500..would be my direction.
here is the mod stock days..he didn't handle well..but we still won 1 st oveall in our class.
Fun stuff

Wow. Cool thread! I am curious though as I have been told nowadays that the Rotax is the one to beat. I only ever saw the SSR's run once here in 78 and they absolutely SMOKED everybody else, winning by over a half a lap! I realize that these guys are using new sno-cross technology 440 Rotax's against 70's tech Yammies. But if a 78 SSR makes 115, what the heck are the Rotax's making?

I would not say one is any better..but the rotax is most popular for ease of getting performance parts etc..
What's his name..makes some mean pipes as well...

IN 1977, THE SRX WAS FASTEST BECAUSE IT HANDLED THE CORNERS THE BEST, BUT THE 77 BLIZZARD HAD MORE HP. THE 77 Z CAT WAS HEAVIER THAN THE SRX AND BLIZZARD. THIS IS WHAT I SAW AT WEEDSPORT AND BOONVILLE HERE IN NY. NOW IN 1976, THE MERCURY SNO-TWISTER GAVE THE SRX FITS, I BELIEVE THE SRX HAD MORE HP BUT THE TWISTERS FLEW AROUND THE CORNERS. NOW AS AWSOME AS THE SSR IS AND WAS, THIS SLED WAS A FAILURE FOR YAMAHA BECAUSE IT NEVER WON A SINGLE RACE. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Cool history, thanks. I know the Twisters were right there, but I always saw the SRX's kill them in the drags which would seem to support the contention they were making more power! I neglected to mention that when Larry Omans and Roy Wall were here in 77, they told me that the factory 77 SRX's were running at least 114 hp!
I have two 79 SRX engines and I was told that Delaughter or Aaen could basically turn that into the equivalent of a 78 SSR engine, true?

been watching a cloned ssr at eagle river and his sled handles really well, course wahl skid, shorter ski's,modern carbides and shocks all help, but most of the video of the ssr i have seen from back in the day showed it in the wall, lol, even rosenquist said something about it when he was inducted in the Hall of fame, something along the lines "that thing was the worst".now the A/C mailbox sno-pro's have the rep for poor handling.

yes..the mercs handled almost as good as our sleds in 76.
I remember at peterborough they wiped out the entire womans class..as they kept busting front ends and the ladies could not take boucing off the plywood walls.
In 75, our mod stock 340 could usually get a top 3 in 400 with the mercs
Bud Lee with his Kohler engine factory support from Toronto was a real threat...on his merc..however..he could not run near the front when the factories showed up.
best spring race sled ever made I think...the merc.
The 79..I have seen stock 79's ..back then ....clear 100 mph at radar runs..

THE SNO-TWISTER GUYS WERE LEFT HIGH AND DRY BY MERCURY AFTER 1976. IN 1977 IT WAS A DIFFERENT BALL GAME RACING THE FACTORY TEAMS OUT OF YOUR SHOP. GREAT POINT RJH. 3:16 (yammie tony)

i saw the original owner race this sled in ironwood in 08',i don't know any thing about ifs sleds, but it just looked wrong, front end was sky high like a 1960's fuel coupe,it was fast, but he crashed it,then took it apart and sold it.
saw your sled and bulid, real nice work, you can make a x sled if you can find the pre 86 indy chassis.need to see more ssr's out there.

I COULD BE WRONG BUT THAT WORLD SERIES EVENT AT EAGLE RIVER WHEN FAST EDDIE WON ON HIS SRX THE WHOLE FIELD WAS MERC,s.3:16 (YAMMIE TONY)thunderjet440 said:everyone knows fast eddie won eagle river in 76 on a srx,but didn't the twisters win every other class? 250,340,440 x etc?

That sounds right and what I remember is when Fast Eddie did his qualifying run it broke a track record by 5+ seconds if not more.

there was 1 arctic cat z for sure,it led for nearly a lap, then eddie blew by him out of turn 3 and 4 and never looked back.it was driven by Lynn Trapp.i always laugh at that because Lynn was probably thinking at that point he shoulda stayed with yamaha.YAMMIEGOD3:16 said:I COULD BE WRONG BUT THAT WORLD SERIES EVENT AT EAGLE RIVER WHEN FAST EDDIE WON ON HIS SRX THE WHOLE FIELD WAS MERC,s.3:16 (YAMMIE TONY)
i'm sure mercs won every other race, womens, jrs, mods,X's etc, that was a big part of the controversy about them pulling the plug after 76.

I have a few txl indy's that will get the ssr treatment soon enough i also have a non taper tunnel for this sled that will get put on it this summer ..............thats a lot of rivets but it will be worth it ........now if they would just allow them at ER everything would be great
