1980 srx lake racer

No thats for any year srx, even a 77. Basicly Olav ported the 76's or 78-80's to 77 specs and slightly more plus his full mod pipes which got you 102-105 if your lucky.
YOU MIGHT BE RIGHT. I,AM GONNA DIG THROUGH THOSE OLD AAEN CATALOGS TO SEE. KEEP IN MIND THOUGH ALOT OF GUYS HAD 78-80 SRX,s THAN 76 AND 77,s AND AAEN WAS TRYING TO SELL PORTING. ANYWAYS GOOD INFO BY YOU. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Dynofun, on who's dyno did you get that number from? I asked you before...I guarantee its a water brake dreamer dyno.
You are mistaken. And, when did you ask me this before? Like I said, it really isn't hard to make 110 HP out of a 1980 SRX (or 76-80) Most of the dyno time I have been exposed to is on a Stuska water brake with data recorder and a Dynomite. If you think the Land & Sea dynos are junk you have a lot to learn. The majority of the fastest racers use them. Back to the SRX, just port it to 77 mod specs (there is better) , cut the heads, use Aaen mod pipes (yes, 30 years old) and throw on a set of 48 round slides and head to the dyno. Oh, use the stock ignition and time it at 1.8mm btdc. It makes a very good, durable engine.

Yes, I have a sled identical to this, although my srx is a 79. Makes the sled much more fun to race and very consistant and I can make pass after pass with mine. Plus it pulls quite steep gearing as it has the torque to do so.

Thanks for backing up my exact points. First off, if you think a water brake dyno is 100% accurate you have alot to learn. The majority of the fastest sleds are useing water brake dynos? If alot of people are they dont have very accurate numbers. Then if they go to Gallaway's or Dynotech they would be suprised I'm sure.

Now touching in Land & Sea dyno's, yes alot of them out there are junk and innacurate, unless they have been updated with the new toroidal flow absorber, which most aren't. I back a couple of years ago I was in the market myself to buy one, and right from the company(land and sea) they told me not to buy any of their old dyno's unless they are basicly giving them away because they arent very accurate, unless they have been fully updated. So as I was in my search just about every one was with one of their old absorbers. Getting the update isnt just about a bearing replacement either, just to point that out, as some people think. Plus, as posted above, the manual load valve and what people use for water supplies makes them very inaccurate in the wrong hands. Undisputable facts. So I gave up and never bought one, for many good reasons. They are just attractive to the average joe who could never afford a real accurate dyno. Thats what makes them popular, and like anything else in life, you get what you pay for and I cant see spending that kind of coin for something that isnt most accurate. If I were to dyno tune something for myself or a friend or customer as I would have wanted to dyno stuff for extra cash, and really be serious, I'd want something to be as accurate as possible, not something that's not very accurate. If you wanted to just dyno to find out where it makes power and werent concerned with actuall factual h.p. and torque readings then a water brake would be fine, but most people including myself want to know where the power is and what its truely making, and not inflated. It is what it is.

Now saying its easy making a true 110+ out of a 76 or 78-80 srx isnt easy. You make it sound like its a cake walk or something. Plus when you slap on those 48's and put more exhaust and intake port timing you just killed more torque and went backwards IMO. Shooting for max h.p. only doesnt work well, especially at the cost of torque loss.

Oh GPXSRXRACER,
You where talking about Daves first set of pipes. The ones he makes now(last two years) are a lot better. They make more power and yes more torque then anything out there. They are a lot like Larrys 440 rotax C/S pipes. Big volume pipes. Not like the old aaen pipes. Go spend $850 on a good set of pipes. Then the porting. Now we know a whole lot more then back in 77. Porting to 77 srx specs? Wow. There's a lot more out there bud. I'm not going to even talk about clutching. My guess is your using a comet clutch.Great!!! The light weight 77 srx yamaha clutch worked the best in 680 ft. Just my 2 cents. You just needed to know a few secrets. Dynofun. Email me and I'll let you in on a few clutch secrets. You would believe what these guys did back then and still today. I'm all done racing on the grass. Don Schmitt is picking up my little devil this morning. My back is just getting worst, so I'm off asphalt racing. I don't have to pick up the sled in that type of racing. Just roll it off the trailer, do a burn out in the water box and run it down the track. Simple and easy on my body. Feel said that I have to let the little s%^t go. I had some fast sleds in my day, but this thing ran like nothing I ever had before. I took the high points champion in open mod in 1996 in the east coast. Then I retired for years. I've been drag racing for over 40 years. Won my first race on a 69 Panther 370 single bored 120 over with a magaphone and two HD carbs. It took two people to start the damn thing. This guy that buying my 77 srx is getting one fast sled. Hope he knows what he's getting into. Just my 2 cents again. Happy vintaging guys. Dean-o

Dean-o, yes, I am aware of what weights to use in the srx clutch(**6), As far as useing a comet, I disagree, but both clutches can be made to work well. I now personally use Cat clutches mostly. Getting rid of the secondary is also another good idea, as it limits your options on primary clutching to a certain degree. As far as porting, I never said stock 77 porting was best, although its not that bad, anything can be improved on, but its not like Yamaha left alot on the table. As far as Dave's pipes, his last design that were supposed to be bad-a$$ werent all they were cracked up to be, glad I didnt waste my money on them(I almost did), if he has new ones as of the past 2 years thats news to me. I would hope they were changed becuase the story posted above a few postings back is true. I wont knock Dave, because some of his sled mods and sleds can and do run well, but those pipes didnt pan out. Plus the more and more I mess with sleds, more h.p. on a dyno doesn't always equal better performance on the track. Dyno racing as its called. You cannot race a dyno, thats for sure.

Is Don Schmitt still doing sleds? He told me he was done as of 2 months ago when I talked with him in January. He lives about an hour away from me. Awesome guy, and great asset to the vintage community. Nice 77 by the way!

Yep he's still at it part time. He left my house a few hours ago with the 77. He had a couple of nice sleds on the trailer. He's a super guy. Did everyone see the post he put on vintage sleds. This guy has owed him $2100 for over a year and Don wants everyone to call this guy so he will pay up. Don's quit upset over this jurk. Take a look on that site. His phone numbers there. Dean-o

Dean-o, I'll check it out right now. Thats crap, he's a one of a kind guy thats for sure. I can see why he might want to quit for that reason alone. Derek.

I need a favor from my friends. I've been ripped off for over $2000 by Tom Laverdier in Maine. He's given me BS for over a year. First BS, then wouldn't answer my calls for 6 months and then even promised to pay up as recently as today, but didn't show (He only talked to me recently after I posted a note on the web and some good vintage sledders called him.)

PLEASE HELP. Just call him several times a day and tell him to pay his vintage sled bills.

Please call TOM at 207-557-0303
and 207-737-8585

DEFINITELY leave him a message on each call. He'd love to hear from you, I'm sure.
(He has 70 sleds he'd sell you. See Tom, I'm a nice guy. Even though you took my hard earned $$$$, I'm advertising for you)

Don "conned by Tom L. in Central Maine" Schmidt

PS Please just call him. I don't want to get into a lot of posts on this wonderful site. If you have a question call me, don't post here.

working out last adjustments on mounts now.it is tight near steering column and brake will need moving.as i go,ill try to post pics.tom

not sure, unfamiliar with this 600 motor so i dont know if the tuned length is the same as the 96 600 pipes.they look like the closest to modify.i might have aaen or leon that makes srx pipes build a set for the 600 using the 440 pipes as a guide for fitment.its just different where it mounts to cylinder, all else fits but i dont know how much more diameter the new pipes would be.if anyone has a set of twin pipes for a 600 id be interested in buying them.oh yeah.water fitting that runs to rear heat exchanger on 600 is gonna be fun also.tom

Nobody makes them, you would have to get a set of GYT pipes, Reichards or PSI's and then cut and fit, thats the cheapest. A custom built set will probably run $800.00 from somebody who builds custom pipes, plus you would need port specifications, ect.

gpxsrxracer, would the pipes u used work with my 97 motor before u did all the motor work?i realize ill have to cut and mod pipes,im just trying to get the best set so i dont need to cut as much.96 pipes fit in a wider front end chassis than the 97 and might be closer if pipe specs r same.

yes, look for a set of pipes for the chassis the engine came out of, then cut and modify them to fit. Most aftermarket pipes are designed to work with stock porting and still can work with porting as well. Just set the sled up without porting first, you might be totaly satisfied with that. As far as what set or year set would be easiest to cut, I have no idea to be honest. It has to be done no matter what so to me that isnt an issue, as they arent going to be able to just drop in anyway and will require cutting and welding to make them work. Its either that or send the sled to somebody who builds and fits pipes to chassis and have them do it, although you know that will be costly.

bought a set of aaen pipes for a 540 vmax at alexander.these r very close to fitting.after asking a couple of yammie guys, they think they might be o.k.any idea what these aaens were clutched to run at?ill give them a try,the exhaust mounts got done today so time to start cutting and fitting.hey yammiegod, how much u want for that 1980?nice srx.tom

TOM, I WOULD HAVE TO CHECK, I THINK AAEN VMAX PIPES RAN AT STOCK RPM WHICH WAS 8200 ON VMAX. AGAIN ALL DEPENDS WHAT PIPES THESE ARE. AS FOR MY 1980 SRX, WHAT DO I WANT FOR IT ? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ CAN YOU AFFORD THAT lol. 3:16 (yammie tony)
