so structurally the stock engine does not need higher octane ,

are you suggesting that the av. gas is to trick the dcs system ?

if the 02 engine is better off with higher octane , correct me if i am wrong, all 00-01 owners should be running av . gas also , or is it just that the dcs system is just too sensitive ?

im not looking to get trashed , or bashed , just a littlle ignorant with dcs , looking too learn something, thanx

The 02's are jetted leaner than the 01's - that is why they put the DCS on them - I have jetted all of my 02's half way between the 01 and 02 specs with good results - for top end running, these sled's like fuel and I think are actually faster with the 01 jetting, but the rest of your set up is going to play a role as always!!

i sort of read your previous post wrong .The 02 does not need higher octane than an 01 .Because of the dcs, yamaha elected to lean out the jetting due to the new found forgiveness.I had my light flashing initially this year beacaus of dirty carbs (had just bought the sled and didn't check them at that point) after a thorough cleaning i've never had my light come on in many wot runs(none more than a mile)i suspect if people are curing there light problems with av gas or race fuel ,then the pump fuel they are buying is not as advertised.(i run sunoco gold whenever possible ,i keep extra cans of it) however i have bought back country prem. with 0 problems too.If there are other factors i'm not understanding them yet .(but i'll be paying close attention to this and other threads regarding this)

jmp2204 - there are other factors and none of us are understanding them - as I indicated earlier, I went as far as running straight 110 LEADED fuel with no success - if you do your homework on leaded fuel, it is designed primarly for detonation control - lead does not ignite - unlike high octane unleaded fuels that have ethers and other combustible substances designed to produce power, leaded fuels primary purpose is detonation control - but that is a whole nother subject - bottom line is that there are other factors besides octance alone that trigger the DCS - this has been proven by numerous people on this forum - what are they? - I'm not sure anyone knows, not sure we will ever know, but I'm convinced that it not as simple as just an octane problem - I think the 98-02 SRX is the most sophisticated sled Yamaha has ever built and I think the DCS glitch on some of them is just a bi-product of that sophistication!! - so what would I do if I had an 02 with a DCS problem that I couldn't cure with octane? - I would jet it to 01 specs, go old school with checking plugs and piston wash, and if all was good, I would unhook the DCS - JMO - I also have an 01 right now that we run hard on premium pump gas 90% of the time with ALOT of WOT runs and no problems - if it is good for the 01 it should be good for the 02 and the DCS would be just jerking our chain - set em up the same, unhook it and run em!!! ;)!

P.S. - as far as octane booster go, I'm about to start a whole new thread on that subject!!

JUST FOR THE RECORD. THE 2002 SRX HAD THE SAME EXACT JETTING AS THE 2000. REASON JETTING WAS CHANGED IN 2001 WAS THERE WAS SOME BURN DOWN ISSUES IN 2000. 3:16 (yammie tony)

AND YAMMIMAN, DUDE YOU NOT EVEN CLOSE. THE SRX WAS NOT THE MOST SOPHISTCATED SLED YAMAHA EVER BUILT. THE 1992 VMAX 4 WAS. SORRY !!! 3:16 (yammie tony)

...THE SRX WAS NOT THE MOST SOPHISTCATED SLED YAMAHA EVER BUILT. THE 1992 VMAX 4 WAS...

My mis YAMMIEGOD3:16 - I forgot all about the electronic controlled exhaust valves, the 3 dimensional ignition, the rare earth magneto, and the Detonation Control System that that sled had on it!!! - LOL!!!

HEY YAMMIMAN, I GOT TO GIVE YA THE POWER VALVES, BUT THE THREE DEMENSIONAL ING, ( not on 98-99 ) RARE EARTH MAGNETO (not on 98-99 ) AND DCS (pain in the *** according to this post ) REALLY CONSIDER THIS THE MOST SOPHISCATED SLED YAMAHA EVER BUILT ? DUDE, THE SRX AINT EVEN CLOSE TO THE VMAX 4. THAT 4 CLYLINDER ENGINE ALONE WAS A TECHNOGLY MONSTER. SORRY AGAIN rotflmao. 3:16 (yammie tony)

We can agree to disagree!! - remember I have a Vmax-4 too!! - I love it for its uniqueness, but it doesn't hold a candle to my SRX's!! - but you know I love the old stuff - I think the 65 Tri Power 4 speed GTO is the most sophisticated muscle car GM ever built!!! - rotflmao back at ya!!

hahaha i still have a 92 v-max4, first "big" trail sled I ever had. Theres 18 000 km on it, all original engine.... Still starts in 3 pulls haha, but its kinda a tank to manhandle on the trails hahaha

if the dcs is unplugged, will it act just like a '01 srx? if so, i don't see why everybody then doesn't just unplug the dcs, jet to '01 specs, and never look back? if i had a '02 srx and the dcs light was blinking at me like a strobe light all the time, no matter what i did, that dcs would be right the f$%# unplugged. another one of those extra electronic things that are just unneeded, unnecessary, and just a pain in the a$$. why not just unplug the light, instead of spending all that extra $ on octane boost, race gas, etc? as for the v-max 4 to the srx "war of sophistication".....i say its a tye, cause they both were sled of the year at one time or another:) actually i think the srx is more sophisticated. the max 4 is something like what "tim the tool man" would do. i think the jackshafts on those things, are like something that you would see polaris do. why not just have one shaft all the way accross? and having what appears to be just 2 engines set side by side, instead of 1 complete itself....c'mon. don't get me wrong, i still think that they are cool, to an extent. but the srx still gets my vote between the 2 in this war.

...if the dcs is unplugged, will it act just like a '01 srx?...

As long as you pull the sensor and isolate it - I had one unplugged once, wrapped it with styrofoam and taped it inside the airbox - what doesn't make sense is the jetting - if 2000 and 2002 sleds were jetted the same and there were burn down issues with the 2000's then why put on DCS as a cure? - jetting was the real issue and the 2001's seemed to prove that - in addition, the 2001 was the year that set the record at the shootout!! - I have both and don't think the lean jetting of the 2002 makes it faster or quicker - kind of a head scratcher!! :dunno:

I would jet to 01 specs and if it still gave me fits then I'd unplug it - two of mine the jetting worked and one it didn"t!!

Yammiman, your last post made me thinking. Maybe it's the sensor that deviates from the other 2? Luckily I have a new sensor at home to try on mine this weekend.

That is the one that getting the clutching spot on made it go off - I sold the sled to a friend and we rode together this past winter and it started going off again - it has close to 5000 miles on it now and could just be in need of a good carb cleaning, power valve cleaning, and power valve adjustment - all I know is it gave me fits!! - 01 jetting and straight 110 leaded race fuel and it still blinked!! - mystery to me!!

ok, does the dcs sense like vibrations/wavelengths and such, to tell itself that detonation is occuring, and it to better back off the timing, if such is occuring? if so, could it then be the wavelengths and vibrations from ones not so well balanced crank, transfering throughout ones engine, to the sensor? cause there is a tolerance on the cranks. ex, so maybe one gets lucky with a near perfect crank, and it doesn't create much vibration/shakes, so when the slightly dirty carbs (that would cause the engine to run/idle rough and leaner than clean carbs that allow the engine to run smooth and not lean) that it has, are cleaned, the engine runs just smooth enough, that when the wavelengths from the engines rough idle clash with the wavelengths from the slightly unbalanced crank, that its just little enough, that the sensor can't pick it up? cause don't vibrations and wavelengths, travel throughout the entire engine? i hope someone can wrap their head around what i'm talking about. its kinda hard for me to explain what my brain is telling me.

one would think that if the sled is jetted to 01 specs ported or not 110 fuel or 94 there is no reason for this false signal because 01 dont blow up all over the trails . I am a yammy man but one has to admit that the system may not be all that ... I would suspect that the cranks in 02 are similar to 01 , therefore the possibility of the system collecting wavelengths or vibs may be true , only prooves the theory of over sensitivity in my opinion. Im sure 02 are everybit as good as 01 without that system ..
