Gutted Air Box???

when you guys gutted your airbox, are still running the foam on it? mine has the air box gutted and it has a fresh air kit w/ all the foams still in place.

yea i kinda figured that it would be foolish w/ all the snow dust thast would get in the engine.

I have my airbox gutted and havnt had any problems at all with jetting/lean conditions..... I didnt remove the dividers though, I was told to drill them out with a holesaw, equal distances apart and the same number in each divider. Havnt run into any problems yet, ran last year 118 mph on radar, covered the holes I had drilled with duct tape just for the hell of it and ran again and it ran 117 mph, this could have been the track conditions though that made it slower. I havnt had it dynoed with the airbox modded so not sure if it actually makes power or not. But I can say I havnt had a problem with it.

The gutted air box that I found on the blown up sled was completly empty and the inlet under the foam was cut substancialy bigger, maybe he did too much. Who knows? Glad to hear urs is holdin together.

Ya I was told not to remove the dividers, just to open the tops of it up by drilling holes with a holesaw... not sure of how many i'd have to go look. I did hear that if you remove the dividers that you will have problems due to how the air flows... Others on here will explain more in detail but that could have been the reason you blown up one is blown up lol.

i always heard of being able to just pull out the dividers and leaving the top shelf alone. if drilling any more/larger holes there, i could see requiring larger mains.

I have done lot of testing with cold air kits and modded airboxes.Comparing to my buddies srx. There is a couple sled legnth gain in a 1000 ft with a modded top and taking out the dividers and uping the mains.

yeah, i was saying leave the shelf alone for trail riding. i had a fellow bring me his '00 srx with scored cylinders for me to rebuild. low and behold when i started digging into it, i found the shelf was hacked open, the dividers were gone, and it was still running stock jetting. no wonder the cylinders/pistons got sad. pro116 your right.....for drag racing, then worth the time/hassle, but for trail riding, just leave it alone.

Ya i have mine jetted fatter then the stock setting, i was told not to remove the dividers as it directs the air flow evenly to each carb, what i was told to do was just make it easier for air to get to the dividers by removing some material (in the form of holes) from the top shelf... I still have my foam in as well

What about just a Bender air box? Would there be any improvemnts? Would I have to re-jet? Is that the same as the before mentioned Bender cold air kit?

Sorry for the whole mess of questions. I just want to know if this is just a golrified gutted air box or if it is worth while.

The bender air box mod is worth it if your lake racing only, you stil need to rejet.I would only do it if your into lake racing if your just trail riding most of the time leave it stock.

That pretty much what I was wonderin in a nut shell. Thanks for the input.

Is the bender air box the same as the cold air kit tho or is it just a part of it? - just for future knowledge

D-HK45 has a bender air box for sale in the classifieds for $30. Don't know if it is complete with foam that goes around the top of the air box and the cold air intake.

i saw that, thats kinda what spawned my question. i didnt know if it would be something worth while just for trail ridin tho. wanted to hear everyones thoughts first. thanks for the heads up tho
