I bought a 2000 SRX with trail ported cylinders, V-Force reeds and a completely gutted air box. The carb noise while riding was horrendous, too dam much noise all the time. I am in the process of restoring the engine to completely stock. Stock = completely reliable = fast enough. I just got a set of new, stock reeds, a new set of cylinders and the parts to return the airbox to stock.

Will this cause a lean condition in the 98/99 ?

If you look on TY Tech at the factory jetting differences from a 1998/99 SRX to a 2001 SRX some interesting things show up:
-1998/99 has larger main jet on Mag side[divider plates in airbox stock]
-2001 has larger main jet on PTO side + larger mains all across[no divider plates in airbox stock]
If everything else is unchanged, I would think that removing the dividers on a 1998/99 and jetting it like a 2001[richer jetting then 2000 or 2002] should be OK...but I would still keep a close eye on the plugs + piston wash to be sure!

I usually gut my air box in the spring when the temp is just below 0 and above and everything seems fine

I wouldn't dare try to gut everything while it is 40 below C unless I changed my mains and my pilots. 1 1/4 is where I stay in our unpredictable weather

Are you referring to the vertical divider plates that slide into slots in the airbox bottom? They seperate each carb throat in the lower portion of the airbox.
The parts micro fiche for 2000 + up SRXs don't show them, my friends 2000 SRX did not have them + my 2002 SRX did not have them as well???

When you unscrewed the top of the stock 2000 + up SRX's airboxes, they only had a horizontal shelf with three "horns" in it.
The 1998 + 1999 SRX airboxes had the same horizontal shelf as well as two vertical dividers, you can see the slots in the 2000 - 2002 airboxes where the dividers slid into the older models.
