Do I need a rear heat exchanger on my SX?

As you can see from my posts, I have been doing quite a bit of wrenching on the ole sled. I have a 760 big bore with triple pipes, notched reed stops and carbon tech reeds. I have seen some discussion on installing a rear heat exchanger from a SRX. When do you want to do this? Is that something I should consider???

There are two types, a curved one that starts at the flap & turns up & in the tunnel by 4-5" and theres the one that starts at the flap & ends at the top of the tunnel...I installed both types on different vipers...the smaller one required different hoses as the heat exchanger nibs are smaller in diameter than the nibs on the flooeboard coolers...just measure your diameter on your floorboard cooler nibs & match it up in the on-line parts locator on the home page of T.Y. If you go aftermarket the bleed screw/bolt doesn't line up with the hole in the tunnel...easy fix, just drill a new hole & tape off the other hole with metal tape...the hardest part is bleeding the system, install took me less tha 2 hrs each sled...cheers
 
I currently have the OEM (small) rear heat exchanger installed that came with the sled when it was new. Is the notion that I should swap it out for the larger one? Is that small one acceptable? Do all SXs have the small rear heat exchanger? (Sorry for all the questions, just learning a lot as a result)

No...Yes...yes...just keep an eye on the heat...when was the thermostat replaced last...over time they get lazy & coolant every two season...keeps everything in top shape= maximum efficiency...cheers
 
I ran a SRX heat exchanger (twice the size) on my piped ported sx,s. Never overheated.
 
red head triples did not come with a thermostat.
yes use a srx heat exchanger.

btw: reed notch does not add h.p. on the dyno!!

Are all the rear coolers the same for the SRX's? I found one from a '98 SRX. Also, what is the trick to bleeding out all the air from way back there? Thanks! Craig
 
Installed the rear heat exchanger. What is the most efficient way to connect them. It seems the running board side has a 3/4" fitting (99 600sx) and the SRX rear heat exchanger has a 1" end. I have a few ideas, but thought I'd check in with my Yamaha brethren first. Thanks! Craig
