kitty cat would smoke both!
haha problem is your too vague, you cant accurately portray who will win or what will happen, What sled 540? Mods or stock? lots of variables
Personally our Aaen piped, ported, SRV was mental, and i know for fact before it met its demise ( cousin + barn) it would suprise ALOT of 600s

540 !!
But...throw in a nicely piped & tuned early version Vmax 540....and that would smoke the later heavier 600's & quite a few other sleds then & even now!!

I would say the 540, unless the tss 600 was very well set up.
The 540 is lighter, and lower.

I'd love to race an old 540 with my '95 600. Personally, stock for stock I think the 600 would win.

We tried just that, we had both sleds with my bro ike. And we still have that old beauty vmax 540
vmx 540 -84 against 600xt -96.
Old vmax just went away when we hitted throttle wide open side by side from 60kmh.
600 xt didnt have any change even it was piped with gyt twins, it is just way too heavy. And old vmax really rips at higher rpms.

I know my '88 exciter was really quite fast. And that sled was full on stock except for the 4 engine rebuilds it got over the years. Ya it's not the 540 motor but rather the 570.
My former Uncle had a 540 in a SRV or SRX from the mid 80's that was quite a monster but that was back in the day when we were running 480 Phazers not lake racers.

I bought a brand new 1994 Vmax600 and then a new 1996 XT600 the 96 had the Yamaha recommened clutching and jetting updates with the additon of the older 1994(?) Yamaha headgasket to increase compression. My 86 Vmax540 had a purple comet spring with 1 shim to bring the engagement up to the Much needed 4200+ RPM range, the Yamaha recommened air box mod, a torque arm, 280/285 MJ's (be carefull below 10 degrees F) and both sleds had 96 woodys in the center belt. Time after time even with the 600's better stock track, which ever sled I was on, that one would pull the holeshot maybe, since I was 30+ lbs heavier than my brother ? Either way at the 100-150' mark the 540 would start pulling away and the father you went the more it gained ! 30, 40, 50 mph starts and any where on top end it was all 540 but, then you have to realize with the 540 Yamaha done something that was unheard of with the twin pipes..... and that was nail the pipes on the head so, well that Aaen, Decker and the other aftermarkets could not touch the stockers across the board ! I never put them on scales but, the 600's aways felt 75Lbs. heavier especially, on tight trails.
B.T.W. in 1994 I still had my 88 Exciter which had a Richards Pro pipe with jetting and clutching, torque arm, cold air intake, hyper hyfax with a frt. bend wheel kit and 96 studs. The Exciter and 94 600 were as close as any two sleds can be and the 600 was stock with the exception of jetting and 96 studs !

my first sled was a VMAX 540 and now I have a 95 VMAX 500 and a 98 VMAX 600, my 600 will eat up my 500 but my old 540 would of gave her a good run, I think I got more top end out of my 540....................lot less cheeseburgers in me back then though, lol

FASTER sled old 540 or 90's 600 v-max?
Well I've raced my 84 540 for 19 years and have raced against alot of good sleds! and have a good track record. I have never raced a 600, but I don't think the 600 would win!

V-max 540 Vs Exciter Sx
Just throwin' this out there... V-MAX 540 to my knowledge is approx. 85-88HP/twin pipes/8500RPM/weight-dunno? EXCITER SX to my knowledge is approx92-94HP/single/7750RPM/weight-dunno(similar)? With clutching/gearing/tracks stock any guess as to the outcome??? Still love seeing the old iron!!!

Yeah..I know, I'm cheating on this thread throwing that out there but those 2 sleds, V-MAX/EXCITER SX, have always interested me and I wonder how they would stack up against each other!?!

I JUST BOUGHT A 83 VMAX. GOOD BUUDIE OF MINE OWNED IT. AFTER HE SOLD IT TO ME HE BOUGHT A 93 EXCITER SX. HE THOUGHT THE SX WAS FASTER, BUT NOT IN A WALK AWAY. LIKE I SAID. THOSE UPDATED PORTED VMAX,s REALLY FLEW ON THE LAKE. I HAVE TO PUT MY MONEY ON THE SX THOUGH. 3:16 (yammie tony)

83 Vmax Value???
So, ballpark, what is a "solid" 83 Vmax worth.. assuming all stock etc.?
One just popped up on the good ole CL & I have a call in to possibly see it later this week. Ad says that on a 0-10 scale, its a 8.9
His price is "best offer" per the ad. Hmmmmm???
So what is "low" & what is "high", again assuming it has not been screwed with too bad. Ad says it has a Comet clutch. Was that the good set up?
I reall dont need one now, but if the sled was good & a good $$...who knows.
He has a pic posted & it looks pretty good in the pic.
Opinions please!!
Thanks, Rob

THEY CAME STOCK WITH COMETS. LOOK ON COVER WHEN YA CHECK IT OUT AND SEE IF IT SAYS '' YAMAHA COMET '' ON IT. IF IT DOSE NOT, ITS ADDED WHICh IS NOT A BIG DEAL. PRICE DEPENDS ON CONDITION. ESPECIALLY COSMETIC STUFF, SEAT, HOOD, SIDE PANELS etc. MOTOR PARTS ARE A DIME A DOZEN RIGHT NOW FOR THEM, BUT THAT WILL CHANGE. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Thats interesting bob I owned a 540 vmx g back in 83 84 and thought I had the world by the ***.It didnt seem as fast as my srx e that I dealt but it was much more dependable, used a pile of yamalube but rock solid engine and cool looking.

YOU SAID IT, ROCK HARD ENGINE.YOUR SRX E HAD MORE HP THAN THE VMAX. THATS WHY IT WAS NOT AS FAST. THE 83 VMAX WAS DETUNED SLIGHTLY WHEN IT CAME OUT AFTER THE 81/82 SRX MESS. YAMAHA WALKED SLOWLY BACK INTO PERFORMANCE SLEDS. COOL INFO BOB, I DO THINK THE EXCITER SX WAS LITEST OF THE THREE. 3:16 (yammie tony)
