My factory skis have 6000 miles and they are pretty beat. Time for new ones and I was wondering what aftermarket performance skis are recommended for
the 02 Viper. Seems to be 3-4 brands out there. Who likes what?

I'm running the Simmons. Not bad, no darting. They are not as good as my Precisions on trail ( I'm running 6" Shaper bars ) but much better in loose snow or off trail.

I'm in the same boat, original skis are in rough shape. Local shop suggested the Doo Pilot skis, even had a good deal on them $240 with 6" carbides. I am considering OE saddleless skis simple bolt on and cheaper.

The Doo pilots work great for trail riding, and thats a pretty good deal. They should just bolt on. It all depends what kind of performance you are looking for in skis. there are a ton of them out there,I have ran Simmons,Doo Precisions,Doo Pilots, C&A Razors, and i am currently running the SlyDog Powder Hound Skis. They all worked great, and i liked all for different reasons, imo they are all night and day better than stock Yamaha skis.

well, i am taking hondo's reccomendation this year. he tried the curve skis (site sponsor) and said they are the best ski he has tried to date. after he said he wished he had them for the whole 13000miles (ish) he put on last season, most of whitch was for the guiness record. as my stockers on the war where beat, i decided to give them a try.

go over to the 4 stroke side as i have seen a few sets of takeoff stockers for sale over there.

I have the plain jane C & A skis. They are "ok" on trails. I put on a pair of the Studboy 7.5" ish shaper bar and that really is the cats a**. Now I have a really aggressive ski setup for hard core trail riding. This is a great combo IMO.

C&A ADX's here with 8" bides

Id describe them as reactive.

They take a lil more effort due to the keel but they are POINT and SHOOT, where ever you want them they are right there, holding that line. Awesome skis but they do take a little more effort so id say they best suit aggressive riders.

I went with C&A Razors on my SRX as well, my stockers were pretty beat. I havent had a chance to get it out on the snow to see/feel the difference but man do they look F'in sweet on my sled!

Arrow skis if you dont need more flotation, they are stock width. ive tried about a dozen different skis and they handle the best, steer easy, 0 darting in all conditions. my second place ski is the simmons with skidoo carbides centered on pivot.

most any ski will be better than a stock 02 viper ski, they are fast and that is all they are, even the viper s style ski is a great upgrade.

if you do a search on my name and skis on the 4 stroke side, i give some reviews of skis i have tried.

I have an 02 viper and recently purchased the kimpex arrow skis. The mounting bracket has a rectangular hole in it where a plastic shim appears to go. I cannot get the bolt too line up when I have the shim inserted. If I take it out it lines up fine.
Should I compress the rubber piece down on the shim to make if line up or remove the shim? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

X2 for the Arrow skis. Half the price and twice the performance of the over priced mainstream aftermarket skis IMO.

Yes use shim if possible,,, use weight of sled to compress rubber mount,, if that doesn't work try a couple C-clamps to compress...

Oh yea,, on skis, I'm running five different yamahas on SLP "SLT"'s and they work great...........

Most people replace the stock skis within 200 miles of the purchase they are such terrible skis, you got 6k out of your stockers so you get an award.

There are many great replacement skis available. Which aftermarket skis to buy largely depends on what you use the sled for/ how you ride.......

Simmons Gen 1/ Flexi skis are excellent. C&A's are great too, and they have many models to chose from depending on how you ride. BeTheViper loves Arrow skis and he knows his stuff. I use Slydog Powderhounds and love them -- I love the awesome flotation off trail they provide. Yammi saddleless mountain skis are are also really good skis.

Even with aftermarket skis you still need to consider getting good carbides. Per Viper_Dave's recs, I called up Bergstrom and installed ski savers and triple point carbides, which work very well. You also need to shim most all skis, believe it or not. I shimmed mine a quarter of an inch in the rear on the ski rubber, and it helps tremendously.

So go get some nice aftermarket skis and get those installed asap, young man.

:2strokes: ;)! ;)!

Just FYI, Hondo fell in love with Curves only after he joined their staff (i.e., payroll). During his high mileage journies he used Yammi Saddleless Mountain skis, which are excellent skis if they are shimmed and installed with decent carbides. They have a really tall keel, which is my theory why they are great skis. I used them for 2 years on my Attak, until i swapped them out for Simmons Flexi-skis, and may soon swap back to the saddleless mountain skis.

But in defense of Curves, I rode my buddies Nytro XTX with Curves a few times and they were decent in controlling darting and rode nice. we mostly were riding off trail, just FYI.

I prefered my Powderhounds, but I also prefer my Mt Viper which the Powderhounds are mounted too......
