Question About Limiter Straps?

I Have Read Alot Of Threads But Still Cant Find The Answer To My Question. I Ride A 03 Viper With 136 Ripsaw 1-1/4. My Question Is: When The Sled Is On The Ground, Should The Limiter Straps Be Loose? My Sled Rides And Handles Great. I Got About An 1" Of Thread Showing On The Bolts. But When My Sled Is Lifted Up On A Stand The Limeter Straps Are Tight. This Has Me Questioning How I Set Up The Suspension. Any Answers Would Be Greatly Appreciated.

YES the straps will be tight when sled is lifted .....i belive there should be like 15 mm of thred showing if adjusted correctly....at least on a 121 thats is what the book says i belive .....sounds like everything is correct o your sled ....
 
i've never touched my straps but i noticed they are as tight as they can be... checked w-arm etc nothing is wrong with it besides no ski lift... i'll back them off to 15mm and see what happens

Hey all- not to just to ask same question again, but, is the length 15mm of thread showing- or is it 15mm from the thread end to where the nuts pinch the plate. Book says 15mm total exposed bolt length, not just the threaded area. Help me on this please, i am doing final check on entire sled right now, VT is next weekend. Thanks to all, al

I've got an 03 Viper and I have never been able to make it lift the skis. Tried everything including the transfer rods, but have given up.

Not necessarily. Most drag racers I know adjust them so it will pull the skis off the line because it is less resistance. Check out Mrviper700's avatar.

And all mountain riders I know loosen them so that it will pack the skis in the powder, same reason, less drag/resistance. There is a fine line to adjust for, want the skis to lift to remove the resistance they create, but don't want to lift so much that you lose some of the front of the track off the snow and thus lose some of the traction you could be getting.

As far as trail riding goes though, most want them pretty tight so they can get back on the gas halfway through a corner and not have the skis come up and they end up going in a straight line. Its all in what type of riding a person likes to do.
 
Akrievins, try messin with the FRA? transfer rods take some time to get set up for the correct use you are looking for.
 
Haven't touched the FRA... Sled handles great, but I'd like a little lift if I punch it.
Wouldn't want to compromise the "rides on rails" feel of it. :)
 
Okay. Is that 15 mm including the nut above the plate to the end of the bolt (non limiter strap end)?

My 03 Viper steers like it's on rails, but the back end is waggin all over the place and I'm thinking I don't have the whole track on the ground. I was wondering if my straps were too tight and I was only using the back portion of the track and it was breaking free. At 15mm I find the starps are almost loose when the rear of the sled is lifted off of the ground.

Also the spec sheet in the Tech section says 25mm NOT 15mm. Which one is right???

I was wondering the same thing. My 03 Viper is all over the place. Just bought it and this is my first season with it. It currently steers like crap and the back is all over the place. There are 6" carbides on the skis and the 96 studs in the track. I know that part of the problem with the rear is that the track could use to be a bit deeper. The 03 only has a 1" track from the factory. I really need to get it to steer better since most of the trails i ride on are more technical than straight and fast..... I haven't been able to check the straps because my skid hasn't thawed out all season and it rests over 200 miles away from where I live.........

Here's a pic to clear it up for you. 'A' is the measurement.

Try the 25 and see if it helps, not too hard to do just a little time.....

Okay, I have the straps set at 25 mm (to spec) and interestingly enough they are now slightly tight with the sled sitting on the ground (no one on the seat).

Loose straps when the sled is sitting on the ground never made any sesne to me because how can they control ski pressure if they're loose with no load? They'll get even more loose with a rider on the sled????

I'll have to do a test run to see if my tail wagging is reduced. I think I was riding on the two skis and the front portion of the track instead of the whole track.

I'll report back.
 
My son is having the same problem with his 03 Viper. The rear end is all over the place when he rides, he is having a real hard time holding on to it. It is all stock with 2200 miles. He only weighs about 140 with all his gear. Should I drop the FRA down to the lower setting? Also should I start with the limit straps first? I was doing a search last night and found a ton of information on this topic. I know every set up is different for every rider. But what would be a good starting point? The sled handles fine and takes the bumps well in the front end I just need to get rid of the rear end problem.
