River..-Dental pick? That's a good idea. I hope I didn't rub ya the wrong way. It wasn't intended. Thanks for the info. I think the beer is the key ingrediant.

I have had luck taking a punch and punching it in further in the axle. This probably only works once. But that's the jerryrig I resorted to. Its a helluva lot better then getting a drill or something else in there broken off.

I think you just have to dig that key out of the shaft. By the way, the key is square and almost looks like tightly wound wire. Maybe if you get a bite and start pulling it will "unwind."
The "joint" you are looking for is under the meter section in the fiche and it is part # 8k447715.
For the time it takes, this is a good thing to check on a yearly basis. Pop the cover off and check that pin is not starting to sieze in shaft. I always give the pin a good coat of "never-sieze".
Gotcha. Yeah, there it is! The post about machining a square hole makes sense ( square drill?--lol)Smart people on here.RIVERRUNNER said:The "joint" you are looking for is under the meter section in the fiche and it is part # 8k447715.

Thats a good idea about the never sieze I'm going to do that for sure!!!!!
No. Someone said that insert is there because it is hard to machine a square hole in a shaft in a production setting. Good logic.jwiedmayer said:Are you referencing my drill comment?

Well , I found out why , my speedo stopped working ,. My drive bearing has completly melted down . Boy am I depressed, Ive drove this sled only about 230 miles since I bought it last season . Just registered it and now it sits in the garage like it has all summer . I have not idea what to do next . I dont know enough about dropping the track and getting everything back together again . Anyone have any ideas or instructions on this . Is this a job that I can do ? Or do you think I should take it to a Yamaha dealer.
Read the instructions in the Tech section on changing a track. If you think you can handle it, go for it. If not, you pretty much have to pay the price.
Can't you just loosen the set screws inside the tunnel and try to pull out the remains of the bearing? Is the drive shaft damaged?

At this point it is hard to tell , the drive shaft doesnt look very good , looks rusted a little, speedo needle is broke off inside of course. I think this is a bit bigger than what Im comfortable with. I called the dealer , they said 3 hours
labor Plus parts , oil, figure on about $350. Could be less depending. Pulling the track takes time he said . They use yamaha bearings .
It isn't that bad of a job. You may not even need to pull the drivers out of the sled. The bearing needs to come out before the sahft any ways. If you can get the bearing off of the sahft, and a new one on, just ride it until you feel like takling the key. Maxdlx
ps you can damn near fly me out to do it for you for $350, that seems stupid hi.

It could be the speedo cable itself, but I've replaced several of the square wire keys, try to keep a spare around. The drive, (the perpendicular device that bolts to the tunnel) from time to time will set up. I've drilled out the stamped cap, small hole so that you can get a needle nosed grease fitting into it and have pumped a stroke or two into it and freed it up. If that key is jambed in the drive shaft end, take it to a skilled mechanic or dealership .
speedometer key removal
When this happened to me and i could never pick it out i used a 7/64 or 1/8 carbide drill bit and drill out the key.
