Quicksilver is Mercury Marine's trademark for parts and accessories.
I think that Mercury made the first oil specifically for 2 stroke engines and Quicksilver oil has always been held in high regard.
Mercury knows their oils, but they may just buy an off-the-shelf snowmobile formulation from their oil supplier. Probably as good as the sled manufacturers oils.
Mercury selling snowmobile oil is the modern marketing method of flooding the market with anything that will sell.

There are a lot of synthetic snowmobile oils - don't understand your point.
I went to the Wal-Mart site to see if they would list a price and did a search for Snowmobile Oil and this is what I got-
Lots of choices-
http://www.walmart.com/search/searc...=snowmobile+oil&Find.x=23&Find.y=11&Find=Find
marine oil I do not think would be a good oil in the cold weather extreme cold for proper flow....

I pay about 22.00 for it here. Yamalube is 28.00. Penzoil and Citgo 2 stroke is 15.00 (these are all for gallon jugs)

...if it has the appropriate specs it will meet or exceed the manufacturers requirements...
Since NO sled manufacture makes oil, & the big refineries make oil & label it for private parties I wouldn't be apprehensive about using it
