I started a new thread for people with new stators so we can determine if the stator has anything to do with it!!!! I am guessing not!
-23 the other day, Hadnt rode either of them in a week, 2-3 pulls each and they were running.. If I have rode them in a day only 1 pull to start.. I guess i got lucky

would reed valves not sealing perfectly contribute to hard starting?... I have oringinal reeds and my starting issues have been progressing very slowly.... just a thought... tj

At the coldest -28 c 3-4 pulls max. If I let it sit for 2 months over the summer thats another storey. Like everyone said here , quicher to dump gas down plug holes that bust your hup pulling 50 times to get fuel into the pig. Have a vipre now with electric start now and reverse. Would never but another seld without either of them. My 99 SrX had tons of Bender parts as well.

I think one of the side effects of the precise fuel metering we get on these relatively small carbs[when they are set to specs] on the Yamahas is that they don't feed a lot of fuel when cold in comparrison to other sleds. I run 2 VMAX4's, 2 700SX,s, + 2 SRX's, some modified some relatively stock. They all take a least 6 pulls when cold[-20-30c] and 2-3 when warmed up. I also put fuel in the cylinders when a sled has sat for a long time and always shut them down with the choke. My VMAX4 866 full mod starts on the 3rd pull cold with TMX 38's.
I was up at Houghton Lake yesterday, I wanted to take a ride on my sleds before covering them up to come home. Both sleds have had the carbs cleaned less than three weeks ago. 2 cans of cleaner on the Exciter, three cans on the SRX. Removed pilots, mains, needle and seats, idle mixture scews, cleaned all inner carb passages. New o-rings on SRX air screws, and power valves were adjusted.
Both sleds took about 7 pulls to get running, but the Exciter hadn't been started in about a week. The SRX had been ridden every day for twelve days, three good days (450 miles) and the rest down to the beer tent/Limberlost (50) and back. Temps were sub zero many of the nights and it was a bitch starting the SRX (7-8 pulls). The last two nights the lights didn't come on for two minutes after it lit. During the daytime (about 10*) she would go in 3-4 pulls.
These things just don't like the extreme cold starting, I'm also thinking of putting in a primer. The above 20* days she'd go in 2-3 pulls cold.

Seems like a lot of people are havin this problem. What I find strange is that my 98 SRX started great in any temp.

lefty here. Count me in x2! Oh beside sled starting easy thing. This year I have consistently needed 20 plus pulls to start engine so my hunch is weak stator since I can smell fuel through the vents in the hood. I just cleaned carbs to make sure that wasnt the problem but I wont know untill I start it outside cold next time. I hope it was dirty carbs. personally 8 pulls Id be happy. thats all it used to take. I look at it as a good workout.snomofo said:

I don't know how worn my reeds are, but i plan on replacing hte pedals to see if that makes a difference... Seems to only be a real hard starter if its extremely cold out... if its about 10 degrees F then it will start like 8-10 pulls... anything colder and i need to get gas in the cyls.

Just to clarify, my first start of the season isn't so easy but I attribute this to my draining of the float bowls in Spring. In this case, I'll add fuel to the tank, pull 3-4 times with full choke, squirt pre-mix into the cylinders and it will start first pull. It may take another squirt into the cylinders but I've never had to squirt it a third time.
After that, as long as it doesn't sit for more than three weeks, again, three pulls max.
I'd rather be lucky than good.

That sucks about 50+ pulls. Sorry I can't add any helpful hints (other than wisecracks). I won't kick a guy that's already winded from pulling so many times.
If it is only temperature related, maybe a block heater or shop light placed under the hood a few hours before starting would help.
