for series, RT=R1+R2....
You're resistance is double in series but 0.5 in parallel.... factor of 4..... too much load current for my pocket book

And to think I went to school for this stuff, albeit 30 years ago. I hate getting old. Thanks for the remedial lesson in basic electricity. I feel so stupid again. Thank goodness I am not attempting to calculate the avalanche point of a Zener diode or some silly such, lol
I am still having trouble understanding why he can't get heat if he has the right resistance.
You might try putting an inline resistor that is rated for that current to split the difference between series and parallel.
