with all the electrical problems and questions i think we should keep a running log of what and where. quickly describe problem then what the end fix was. My sled was hard starting and ocassionally lost spark all together. I replaced the stator and still had issues, then found a rub through in the right footwell on one of the smoothing condenser wires. no more starting issues.
 
i have dash completely dead after starting and headlight fuse blowing.

have yet to find cause but will update when i find it next weekened , exspecting to find rud thru under motor.
 
rubbed thorugh wires behind the steering post. they were rubbed through up high right underneath where the handle bars turn. just reconnected the wires back together. they were the two wires that connect and enable the TORS. still have an issue with spark somewhere.

Viper Rub Thru

I Had The Classic Viper Rub Thru Last Season Its Symptoms Were.... Dash Cut Out And Recycling When High Beams Were Used.. Problem Was Under The Motor. Fix Was To: 1 Unhook Harness At The Hood. 2 Tie String To It. 3 Pull Back Untill Out From Motor Tape And Fix Rub Thru Areas.... Re Install
 
I had problems with the handwarmers, I feeled that they didn´t have the heat they had earlier. And one day the sled totally died in the middle of nowhere, I wasn´t alone so I left the sled and picked it up later. I took out the white relay as mentioned in the manual and the sled run, so I understand it was an electrical problem. I found a rub through, I couldn´t see it but when it feeled the wires I could feel a damage in the wires. I don´t really think it rubs through, I think that because of the small distance between the engine and the chassie of the sled. That hard landings after a jump the engine moves down and cut the wires. Only my theory but what everyone else thinks? I have some friends that had raced vipers (snowcross and hillclimb) and they put in an extra engine stop under the engine and they never had any problems.
 
Mine would not start if left out in sub temps in the wind after about 20 mins of sitting after riding. Engine would cut in and out and sometimes stall, yet start right back up. Had various codes on dash. Had rub through on harness below motor and about 12 wires gone in left footwell.
 
2000 SRX FOUND MINE RUB THROUGH AT STEERING POST AND SMASHED WIRE UNDER MOTOR BY COLANT HOSE. MY TACH STOP WORKING, NO HEADLITE, SPEED-0 BEGED ITSELF AND ENGINE STOP BUTTON WORK IN REVERSE. 3:16 (yammie tony)
 
I had a rub through recently on wire harness very close to where wires attach to Thermosensor or thermo sensor. The black and blue wire had a long rub through where wire was exposed for 1/2 an inch. I was just getting the 8 code continuously flashed at me in a loop, which was telling me it was a failed thermosensor, but my sensor was actually just fine. Was a PITA, but is fixed now.

i had a rub through under the handle bar pad. It caused the sled to bog the odd time, and the headlights would cut in and out.

I actually spoke to soon and now I have a new to me thermo sensor on its way to me from sledparts. I hope this fixes the issue!

My buddys SRX 600 keeps blowing tail lights, no low beam, and when you push the high beam swith the dash lights flash and sometimes the tach moves.

Hoing to check for rub throughs under motor.....will update.
 
My Electrical issue

I had some similar problems where handwarmers went dead and then my tach would reset once in awhile, burped once or twice, hard starting, then lost spark all together! Checked wires, but not right underneath the motor, had continuity on everything, replaced stator assembly and back to normal. Rode about 200 miles and hit a storm and my tach and light dimmed out, and ran fine, on idle my engine light pops on and when i give it a litlle throttle it goes away? not sure about that. no other issue since then? but kinda skeptical of the wiring system in general after reading others stories. :2strokes:
 
I found rub throughs on the wires between the carbs and the pipes while replacing a coolant hose. Most were rubbing between the hose going to the pump (over the recoil) and the one going to the head. The wires had worn the hoses too. I didn't have any electrical issues though.
 
Sled = '99 SX 600

Problem = hand/thumb warmers worked intermitantly

Diagnosis =
1. wiring harness rub through at steering column just before harness goes under the handle bar pad from wires being bent back and forth during steering
2. wiring harness rub through where harness runs along right side of dash. Wires were pinched between plastic of dash and frame tubing

Fix = removed all covers, plastic and wire ties, isolated and repaired wires at rub through locations and then retaped wires with two layers of electrical tape and two layers of "FRICTION" tape. You can get friction tape at your local Menards in their tape section by wall coverings and paint.

I had a rub through on my 2 pick up coil wires, that caused the sled to pop and back fire and no power under load. you have to pull silencer and recoil off to see them
 
Tach, head light and break light did not work. Was told on here to take out the relays on the left side of sled by knee and dry them out. Did that and have not had that problem again.

same spot for me, no symptoms, found while i had engine out
