lower gear bolt backed out through chain case

a new drive shaft is only a hundred bucks providing you use your cogs!!! and devcon 2 part putty will seal up your cover, just make sure its clean and oil free!!

Yeah Im hopin to not have to remove the drive shaft. The threads look good past the 3rd or 4th thread so Im thinking I can re tap. Btw, I think that I could have ridden the sled a long way the way it was. Pretty ingenious thinking the way the chain case was holding on the bottom gear. Glad I was luck y to find it while doing maintenence.

happened on my Dad's Viper Venture in January. No damage to the shaft, but the threads on the bolt were gone. Replaced bolt and cover. I believe it happened at low speed. I had used loctite and torqued it, but I hadn't cleaned the original bolt first and I'm guessing the pressure from the reverse gear spring made my torque wrench click too soon. Expensive mistake but still cheaper than taking it to the dealer.

Any one ever have this happen. Also what tap will I need to fix the shafts threads. ANy thoughts?
the thread is 10mm x 1.25. make sure to use loctite. when using loctite make sure the hole in the shaft and the bolt are free of oil or it wont work.

Sounds good. I have a can of parts cleaner ready to roll and a fresh tube of locktite!ON a happy note: I dont think I ll ever sell my sled. I have gone through most everything in the sled and it always get me back home. Hell, even when I bought the thing blown up(not knowing years ago) It still got me about 25miles from the trailor back to the truck on barely two cylinders. :ban:

Had mine happen also this year and it went right through the outside of the chain case .... ran all winter like it before i saw it. Crazy thing! Bolt head was sticking right through.

You guy's need to remember to use High strength loc tight TQ to 35 fp and let stand for 24 hrs. them bolts should not be backing out.

ok guys, trying to remember, bottom gear. Does it go in with the flat side against the shaft or flat side out. You'd think that the nub would go in to bring out the gear but it doesnt look right when I tryed it that way. I need a manual. I had one but it got deleted. This is why I would love to have a paper one.

flat side out,nub goes in.
;)! Thanks a bunch. All back together with mobil one synthetic mercon. Replaced some worn out exhaust donuts while I was at it and springs. What a difference in tone. I also will say that I put a new stator in since my sled has been starting so hard after really cold nights up north.(10-15 below) This is a brand new oem yammy stator. I hope it will help. I will update people how it goes.

the gears only have the number of teeth stamped on one side, and it goes out. The other way to confirm is to put something straight across the chain case and measure how far back the top gear is from the edge of the chain case and make sure the bottom one measure the same.

one more thing I do... I take pictures with my cell phone as I disassemble, even when I think I'll remember how it goes back together! the book doesn't always show it clearly.

not all gears have a number stamp. :o|
Yeah, my gears had no number stamp and daman I gave the bolt a bath in loc tite after using brake cleaner to get everything nice and clean. SHould be all set now.

I had it happen on my 01SXR600. Punched a hole in the chain case cover. Had the cover welded up, put the bolt back in chain looked okay (a little scratch here and there). Went for a ride and bang, the chain broke, took out the gears and the chain case.

If your bolt actually cam e out of the hole then change the chain!!!

Good Luck!
