Carbides for Viper ....

Well after my recent Viper S purchase I'm thinking ahead and looking to buy a set of good carbides. I'm looking at the Woody's Slim Jim Dooly's and the Stud Boy Deuce. Anyone have any recommendations? (No Studs, looking for 6"). I'd also like to know of a good place to buy carbides from (I'm in Canada).

Any comments would be great ... Thanks!

I had good luck with Stud Boy Shaper Bars on my Mnt. Viper with stock skis. Now I am switching to Slydog Powderhounds with a different carbide set up..... But I would really recommend Shaper Bars -- I liked them a lot.

On my Attak I have stock skis with Doolys (regular version). They are pretty nice also..

Yeah i've heard Sharpers were nice, although I think i'd really like a set of dual carbides for that extra bite. Anyone with a short track have a comment? Thanks mtnviper!
 
Had woodys dualies on my viper with 144 studs, absolutely hated them. Didn't matter how much weight I could put on the ski's it still pushed in the corners like a rock. Switches to ACS 6 inch, they were pretty good. Rode an 02 with no studs, had 6 inch shapers on it. Handled like an SRX... on rails. Thats what I'm running this year.

If your sled has a ripsaw, woody's recommend 4" carbides. I ran 6" woody and liked it. Best thing you could do is take the stock skis off it and throw some slydog trail skis on it with 6" woody's. I like that setup a lot.
 
Yeah I have the Viper S, 04' with stock ripsaw track, no studs, mainly groomed trail riding. I've been doing more reading on this subject looks like a lot of guys ride with shapers or bergstrom triple points. I don't think I'm ready to spend the cash on skis just yet, that'll be next year - will carbides I buy now fit aftermarket skis? The holes should line up the same I figure.

How did you get those to fit???? I had heard ski savers and shaper bars won't work together for some reason (but maybe just on Slydog skis??? )......

The holes rarely if ever line up between stock and aftermarket skis.Now if you have a cut off saw and a welder now that changes things, but sometimes even the profile of the runner is different.

If you're buying carbides anyway, slydogs with mount are like $238 for trail skis, then you could probably sell your stockers for $150.

This is off of ebay, but he is a TY advertiser.

hmmmm, you've got me thinking that's for sure. One thing that worries me about future usage of aftermarkets is carbide choice, since they don't match the stock ski holes. I guess your limited to what the manufacturer of the ski offers. I would therefore be stuck with whatever Slydog sells with their skis. (Shapers i suppose).

It makes sense though, if I am going to replace the skis eventually anyways, to do it now and not waste money on new carbides for the stock skis this year. What about other brands like USI or Simmons? Slydog is the way to go?

In terms of Slydogs, they share the same bolt pattern to attach carbides as C&A skis. Both are fairly popular aftermarket skis. And various aftermarket carbide makers have assortments of carbides for each brand.....

While it is true you would have a better carbide replacement selection with oem skis, it seems with either Slydogs or C&A's your selection is decent enough. Bergstrom sells his carbides for these skis also.

I trail ride, we like to think of ourselves as high speed touring. lol I guess now they have named our segment "Power Touring" - whatever. The thing I like about the Slydogs with 6" carbides is when your cruising slowly with the fam or your arms are getting tired at 300 miles and you ride a little mellower they are very forgiving skis. But even better than that is that they respond awesomely when riden aggressively as well. Of the few mods I've done to my sled, I would say the slydogs are #2 and the boss seat #1 - but $ for $ I would call them a tie! I love the skis and I love the boss seat. (Don't tell my wife!) :)
 
That's awesome to know that I can still have a decent selection of carbides.,.... I think that's what I'll do before the snow flies. All the literature and opinions seem nothing but positive on these aftermarket skis. The price is right on those slydogs too, seems like many are using them. Now, last question for you guys / (gals?) are there any other incentives for being a member of this forum? Coupon code of sorts? Thanks for the article attachment too xsiv - informative.

I would suggest Kimpex Arrow skis. They have a dual keel, they're not flat like boards (C&A), they're reasonably priced and they have a reputation for working well with 2-Stroke Yammies. I ordered a pair for my 01 SRX...
 
I agree with xsivhp, I had C&A Adv with 6: shaper bars and berstrom ski savers and they handled like night and day. I rode the viper once with stock and took thm off and sold for 125? Plus the ski is a little wider "6 width, which is good.
 
Back in the 90s I bought a Kimpex hyfax saver kit fit my 340 enticer, It lasted all of 75 miles. I will never, given a choice, buy anything with the words Kimpex on it. Just my 2 cents worth.
