Can I run a 96 600 twin piston in my 98 motor?

nope.

Looks like my replacement piston is from a 97 not a 96. It is different in that it has a recessed notch on the pin sides that my 98 doesn't have. Is this still OK to use? Thanks
Both piston should be somewhat close in weight.

Yes, they weight the same and measure the same so how could they not work. Must be just an updated design.
I had a 97 and 98 and yes there was a piston update in 98 if I remember right according to my dealer at the time.

yes, '98 pistons were updated from the '97 pistons, which were notorious for the ring stop pin backing out, causing the ring to spin and snag on the exhaust port, causing all sorts of destruction. i personally would just get a '98 piston. your '97 piston would work tho, if you really feel like running it.
