I got myself a 98 srx last year, I love the sled. I would like to know if there is a way of telling if it needs new rings, and if so should I re-hone the cylinders as well. Thanks. :2strokes:

If in doubt...Get a compression tester and test with engine warmed up and throttle wide open! Anything below 100psi needs to be done or if your picky like me I redo at 110psi! cross hatch the walls with spring loaded fine grit stones just to take off the glaze and new rings, wrist pins and connecting rod bearings followed by new gaskets all around.

A CYLINDER LEAKDOWN TESTER IS THE right way TO TEST CYLINDERS... usually AROUND 3000 MILES IF YOU ARE RUNNING CONVENTIONAL OIL AND UP TO 5000 MILES IF YOU RUN SYNTHETICS!!!!!

you wont have to touch that motor for another 4000
cant say i agree, depends on how it was treated in those 4000 miles and since he didn't own it since new he really doesnt know. myself i rering every 4-5k anyway but i'm a hp junkie and want every last 1 available. rings are cheap and then you know, my .02

Wrong....to keep it IN tip top shape peak performance and efficiency it's ready for new rings NOW, one doesn't notice the performance and efficiency loss over time because it so gradual rings are so easy and cheap to replace, you can bet you have blow by,will it keep running fine for many many more miles????? sure it will it's a yamaha but the reasons i stated above is why you should do it.

good luck...

As Gary suggests, the best way is with a cylinder leakage test outside of tearing it down looking for signs of blow-by which means if you've got the piston out at that point, no sense in not re-ringing it.

Since you don't know the history, for peace of mind I don't think you'd be waisting money by re-ringing it.

But in my opinion, the recommended interval for ring replacement is lower than necassary for plated cylinders combined with folks that follow proper warm up and use quality oil.

Again, IMO, the primary reason for the recommended interval is to measure all pieces for excessive tolerances to avoid catastophic failures.

Another reason is that Yamaha doesn't only sell snowmobiles, but parts too.

Your mileage may very.

Thanks guys, I am going to put new rings in this season, I don't know if I will bother porting, as I feel it is fast enough for me, and as all of you have stated, I will start with the clutches. Thank you for the comments

A SRX is pretty fast in stock form, good luck take your time and use OEM rings. clean and adjust power valves too.

post back if you want...

I did clean the power valves last year, put on a stinger pipe, cleaned the carbs. I have the shop spec. dvd rom for my laptop, helps out.
I do try to use OEM parts as much as i can in all my stuff. I am sure i will but the crap out of you guys with dumb questions...sorry.

leak test. stock srx w/ new rings will usually leak about 5%. over 20% will require top end service. need to check skirt to wall clearance & hone cylinders. dynotech did a test on a 600 skidoo w/ 30+% leakage on both cylinders. only down about 2 h.p..

Wow if i had 30% leakage she'd be getting rings!!!,,,that piston is rocking in the boar and hammering/wearing on the skirts. :hide:
