So I rebuilt the top end, adjusted powervalves, and changed my drive spring this fall. First time I was tooling around in yard I heard this weird noise every now and then. It seems to be under throttle only. It sounds like a metal on metal sound like when you'd tap the clutch with a small hammer. Could something in the clutch be making this popping sound? Could it be the powervalves popping against the cylinder if they are adjusted too tight? I heard a trick that you can look at the powervalve servo and if when you idle down it bounces up and down they are too tight...it isn't bouncing. Should I pull the clutch apart? It doesn't sound like an internal issue or a knock. Maybe it's internal and I'm f'd.

Probably a belt. I had a very small piece of belt starting to separate before and It was making some horrible noises from just a small piece coming off.

Switch belts to see if it goes away.

hard to say without hearing it myself, may be many things, i have heard some clutches that are just noisy especially low rpm, mostly with people that put on comet clutches though. I have also had problems with the gearbx before that would make noise like that cause it was jumping the chain but thats more definitive. i would guess clutch or depending on how bad it is it may be a fuel ping, make sure its good gas. when you did the top end did you put new bearings in it and check the wristpins? not to offend you but some people do think rings are all there is to rebuilding. hard to tell without hearing the sound myself. good luck.

hey

Put it up on the stand..and check your back drive wheels to make sure the shaft in the back is tight...I've had that loosen up on me and rachet sounding like the whole sled was comming unglued...lol spin the track and make sure its not hitting on the front rad protectors..maybe your rad protectors are tearing off that will give you a large metal like smash sound but when it happened to me it would seem to go away if i drove faster...

You never know..Is there a vibration in the sled when driving slow...????

New wrist pins and bearings. Yeah I hear you on the noise. I am pretty good with motors and noises and it doesn't sound internal. I think it's something in the clutch. When its jacked up you can hear it near the drive clutch or PV location. I'm thinking clutch...maybe I'll take it back apart tighten and lock tight everything.

No vibration...rolls over nicely. On jack it def makes noise near clutch or front on engine.. Tough to tell though...my friends don't hear it but I do. It's tthere...

Trying new belt is easy, I will do that to eliminate or solve that...thanks.

I had similar sound last year. One of the bolt holding the secondary's shaft was loose. Tight the nut fixed it.

If you have replaced any power valves...you might want to ensure you dont have any Viper power valves in your SRX.
Also check for a broken power valve. I broke a power valve blade off my PTO cylinder last ride of last season. Once the blade breaks off, it can drop down bounce off the piston, pretty easy to check for...just remove your valves as you would to clean them and ensure they are all in one piece!

I'll check them. I bought the powervalves from a guy on this site, how do I tell if I have the correct ones?

You would have to compare them to a known SRX valve. The Vipers are a different size[maybe a little longer?]...I have never seen one myself as all mine are SRX.
