Well I bought a mint 2001 sxr700 in the summer with 9300 miles. Ran GREAT. Just took it out and 5 miles out it shuts off. Started right back up and rode 1/2 mile further and it shut off again! Now its seized as the pull handle wont budge. If I didnt have bad luck Id have non at all. Is there anything I can check and wheres a good spot to get a new top end?

Sorry to hear that. So it looked mint on the outside only...? Did you ever check compression when you bought it....?

Anyways, at over 9000 miles there is a lot of thing the sled will need, in my opinion, unless it was well taking care of and all the maintenance done when it was supose to be done....

Go over the whole thing and I know you will get another 9000 out of it.....And the best place to get a new top end is the dealer, stock pistons and rings will be the way to go.

Good luck and keep us posted

Nick

Well Ive worked on atvs for years but snowmobiles are new to me. The track and the plactic things the track rides on where new as are the front skis. Only mod is a can.

If you want to try, the next thing will be to pull the airbox, clean the carbs, clean the pipes and can (look for mice nest). maybe try to add some oil down the plug holes and slowly turn it over, it might go but its a long shot.....

Or better yet pull the head and inspect, first drain the coolant tough....

Just checked the dipstick for the drive chain and it had some metallic buildup. Is this normal or would caus emy problem?

if the engine wont turn over , d'ont waste your time with the chain drive , pull the top end part , post some pics , then we can help from there

Plugs look great as do the tops of the pistons. So that leads me to believe that the crank is siezed unless all the pistons are seized. Figures it wouldnt be something easy!

First mistake that sled should have never left the shop without many many things done to it. thats allot of miles for a new sled just bought. and taken out wo a going over.

Like what. Im new to snowmobiles and I looked it over and everything looked good. If the crank went how could I hav eknown beforehand?

drop a bit of oil in each cylinder thru the plug hole and try rolling it over back and forth , using the primary clutch , not re-coil " im tinking the rings are seized to the cylinder walls "

or just pull the head and cylinders to minimize damage

If the the pistons are stuck in the holes(bore) and as long as the cylinders aren't "tore up" and the plating on the cylinder walls is fine you should be able to remove the smears of aluminum on the cylinders walls from the pistons. Meaning you shouldn't have to buy cylinders, Plus if you do need cylinders you should be able to find some one who deals with Millenium Technilogies as they re-work and exchange cylinders, You may already know this if you deal with dirt bikes and ATV's. I'm going to bet the PTO side is stuck (just a hunch) if so, then the lower half is going to have to come apart and replace the bearing on the PTO side and seals on both ends. GOOD LUCK! T

IF the crank "went" is a bland statement. it's more like "if" a rod would have broke and the makea a HUGE mess and ugly windows in the crankcases. the cranks in snowmobiles are on ball bearings, who knows maybe abearign did let go but I think you should or could have heard the bearing make some sort of noise.

No noises at all just kiunda stalled out and now I cant pull it. Why would it stall, then start up then stall again? What would cause the piston to sieze? Think maybe I didnt get oil to a cylinder?

To answer your question, momentary seizure then full seizure after restart.

Well there is a couple of things that may lead to lack of oil - if this really happened.
First would be how much oil is in the resivour, if full okay onto the next question,

Was the oil that was in there mixed with a non compatible oil and it gelled? -need to check to find out.

Did someone mess with the throttle cables? Because, there is one cable that runs the oil pump and the other runs the throttle slides, the one cable runs the variable ratio oil pump so that you get enough oil at high RPMs(not like premix systems), if the cable is way out of adjustment or not hooked up then this is the cause of your failure.

There should be an in-line filter to your oil pump between the oil bottle and the pump, "if" the filter is plugged then this will cause a oil related problem. also if the injection system was apart and there was an air lock or bubble in the system again here is your failure.

You REALLY need to pull the heads and cylinders off of that motor to see what is going on or happened. Because this will also tell a story of where to look for the issues at hand.

If your motor goes down the first time out it is nearly always one of two things. If the crank bearings went then the motor wasn't stored properly(fogged). If the top end is seized then your carbs were dirty.Buying used is always a crap shoot. The first thing I would ask a seller is what do you do to it for storage? If he says that he just starts it every couple of weeks or he dumps a bit of oil in the plug holes then the conversation is over. That just doesn't cut it.
