First ride on my 99 SRX and pow!

Is there any way to diagnos a bad seal other than guessing? I jst got the sled, and I don't have the money or the know how to tear out the whole motor. Especially if I don't need too!
if your motor was in running condition, you could start it up and spray ether (quick start) between the clutch and the crank. If the engine revs up, the seal is bad (ether getting in).

Running one replated cylinder on an engine should not hurt a thing people do it all the time so I doubt it will affect your sled any differently besides the rest of your top end has only about 500mls on it correct?

So I shouldn't use the cylinder if the nikasil is flaking?

Well I took the cylinder off, and the piston out. There is also a hole burnt in the side of the piston just below the rings where the top is melted. The inside and bottom of the piston look great....almost new????

The walls of the cylinder look to have a lot of the nikasil "flaked" off. Looks un-useable to me.

Should there be any play side to side on the rod? There is none up and down, but some side to side.

Head looks ok, just a small spot of build-up. Melted aluminum from the piston?

Pics attatched......

That piston looks just like mine identical hole in the front, are those water drops on the piston from cleaning or were they on there when you removed it? did the piston get stuck in the cylinder or did the motor still turnover?
Also that head has been painted, thats not the original colour. Gonna pass on some good advise I got here...pull the crank case and have it checked by a pro. Who knows what kind of mickey mouse b.s the previous owner did to sell his problems to you, I'm in the same boat, well kinda...its raining here LOL!!!

looks right to me, from what i can see of it that is

X2, at least it's the same color as my '01.

Also, it sure looks like that plating is beyond use unless thats aluminum from the piston transfered to the cylinder. Mauratic acid will remove it without damaging the plating. Hard to tell from the pic but if you can catch a finger nail on it, it's time to replate.

The water is from snow/water....not inside the cylinder. The piston was free moving....sled still turned over and started fine. Just back fired on that cylinder. As for the head....don't think it was painted....all 3 look the same.

Maybe you should take a peak at those other two cylinders...m2c

take the cylinder to a motor machine shop near you and ask there opinion if the nikasil is peeling or worn away, if it is not then the acid mentioned will work ,other wise us chrome will exchange for reman (renikasiled) its faster than getting yours redone, my guess is plugged or partialy pluged jets, no way to tell until you get it back together to test crank seals or you can reassemble and make plates(i have used wood) to cover exhaust and intake and then you can presure and vacume test that would tell you hope this helps

Yeah. I'm going to look at them. The plugs looked good on them....nice and tan....and they both had good compression. I still want to see them though....even if it's just for piece of mind.

Here are some pics of the power valve from the blown cylinder.....covered in oil.....has some build up on it.....I am going to clean them tomorrow. I also checked the jetting and with help from other TY members it seems ok...PTO 150, CENTER 150, MAG 152.5.

Well I fixed it. So far it seems dirty carbs and s@%& gas were the culprits. I put a re-plated cylinder, new piston and rings in it. Has great compression....wash seems to be ok....plugs burning ok as well. I did the starting fluid crank seal test (i think) and no change in the idle.

Hopefully headed up North for a weekend of trouble free riding on Saturday!!!! :letitsnow
